Duties

Studies and implements effective recovery actions to save rare birds from extinction and measures success. Incorporates appropriate geographic information system technology, with resource management-themed databases, for the purpose of integrating geographic concepts into forest bird management. Evaluates the potential effects of avian malaria control strategies, including integrating new technology into resource management conservation objectives. Identifies research needs and oversees the Park scientific research programs for Hawaiian forest birds.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Successful completion a full four-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position. You must include transcripts. - OR - Combination of education and experience that included course work equivalent to a major (i.e., 24 semester hours) in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or a discipline closely related to biology; PLUS, appropriate experience or additional course work. The quality of the combination must demonstrate that you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work of the position and is comparable to that normally acquired through the completion of a full four-year course of study with a major as described above. You must include transcripts. EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience includes: study, inventory, monitoring, and/or restoration management with Forest Bird ornithology in Hawaii. Experience must include a broad range of natural resources; vegetation, wildlife, exotic and pest species, sensitive species and associated ecological components such as air, water, and soil. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a PhD or equivalent graduate degree in an accredited educational institution concentrated in a field that is directly related to the work of this position, in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, ecology, or ornithology. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. For example, six months of the specialized experience equivalent to GS-09 (50 percent of the experience requirement for GS-11) and 45 semester hours or 68 quarter hours of appropriate directly related graduate education (50 percent of the education requirement). You must include hours per week worked and must include transcripts. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).
