About the Position: Works within the Clinical Pathology Service in the Department of Pathology and Area Laboratory Services (DPALS), a College of American Pathologists (CAP) accredited, full-service laboratory. Weekend, evening, night, and holiday, and situational coverage on a rotational basis may be required.
Duties
The function of the Microbiology, Bacteriology Subsection is to recover, identify and do drug susceptibility tests on microbiological pathogens from patients.
Perform routine and special culture techniques for pathogens from all types of patient specimens and to report and certify results in an electronic laboratory information system (LIS).
Requires the ability to teach these methods to students, other technicians and residents.
Isolates and identifies microbes from tissue, body fluids, wounds, bloods and other sources submitted by the physician.
Determines methods that are to be used: selects culture media, reagents and/or systems for specific tests to accomplish biochemical, enzymatic or molecular reactivity patterns.
Makes preliminary and final reports to the physician.
Demonstrates expertise in the fields of bacteriology, mycology, mycobacteriology and parasitology so that the incumbent can rotate through all areas of the Microbiology Laboratory.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
- This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross.
- This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 40 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment drug test screening, and random testing thereafter,
- Must be fitted for and wear protective gear.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. BASIC REQUIRMENT FOR MICROBIOLOGIST:
A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.
OR
B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service which includes experience with bacteriology, sample handling and inoculation, troubleshooting, and microscopy..
OR
Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
