About the Position: Duties performed at Womack Army Medical Center Dining Facility. Works within the kitchen, patient tray, and serving areas for a 7 day a week operation. May rotate shifts as needed and based on mission requirements. Shift work is 0500-1330, 1000-1830. Provides daily oversight of each shift which contains patient tray workers and leaders, cooks, food service workers, and cashiers, both contract and federal employees.
Duties
Select workers and assign tasks to be performed.
Maintain balanced workloads to achieve the most effective and efficient accomplishment of tasks in an equitable manner.
Instruct subordinates in new procedures.
Promptly address customer concerns.
Establish deadlines and priorities on the basis of general work schedules and methods and policies established by higher levels of supervision.
Complete and turn in all meal service and regulatory paperwork in a timely manner.
Communicate recommended adjustments to production, ingredient, recipe, menu, or processes for improvement of operations and outcomes to leadership.
Develop performance standards, counsel employees on performance, and make formal and informal performance appraisals.
At the beginning and end of each day, balance the cash operations vault, prepare and issue cash register trays and reconcile change fund.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires incumbent to obtain and maintain a favorable result from a National Agency Background Check.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
- Immunization screening may be required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
- Incumbent is subject to shift assignments on a 2 shifts per day, 7 days a week schedule.
- This position may require the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
- This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- This position has been designated Weather Essential. In the event of inclement weather conditions the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- Employee is required to wear protective shoes.

I am skilled in recognizing employee achievements and administering constructive discipline when necessary. I am skilled in preparing a commercial kitchen for quality assurance inspections established by higher authorities. I am experienced in planning for all phases of food production and meal service elements. I am skilled at instructing lower graded cooks on food preparation techniques in a kitchen environment. I am an expert and work with a high degree of independence - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Effort: Cooks at this grade level perform work requiring continual standing and walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing and pulling, and bending. They frequently lift or move objects weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds) unassisted, and occasionally lift or move objects weighing over 18 kilograms (40 pounds) with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers.
Working Conditions: The work is performed in kitchen areas which are well lighted but are often hot and noisy. The cooks are exposed to steam, fumes, and odors from cooking and to extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezing units. There is danger of slipping on wet floors that have been recently mopped or where food has been spilled. They are subject to possible cuts from knives and burns from steam, hot foods, stoves, and hot grease and water.
