The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) has adopted the Nutrition and Food Service (NFS) Modernization Initiative which is a new model of organizing and consolidating essential Nutrition and Food Service functions and services to the Medical Center. The primary purpose of the position is to provide administrative and customer service support for the VA hospital food service program.
Duties
Major duties to include but not limited to:
Utilize a computer to enter and retrieve basic information.
Utilize dietetic software programs to retrieve diet orders, recipes, and menu and inventory data.
Prints and assembles packets.
Properly operates telephone equipment to transfer or place calls on hold.
Provide professional and courteous customer service.
Triages telephone calls from customers and/or patients.
Provide basic-level education and information on therapeutic diets to patients, guests, and nursing staff.
Resolve customer and/or patient complaints.
Utilize knowledge of basic and routine modified diets to identify problems in diet order information and take appropriate corrective action.
Correctly interpret diet activity and patient information, to ensure appropriate food items on meals trays.
Verify physician orders for unusual diets, conflicting modifications, tube feeding orders and nutritional supplements.
Assist with food selections, ensuring appropriateness of menu selections for complex diets.
Answer the telephone using proper business etiquette.
Communicate with customers in a pleasant, friendly, personable, and professional manner.
Communicate effectively via telephone and in-person.
Attend to both verbal and nonverbal aspects of communication

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/25/2023.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-05 position you must have served one year at the GS-04. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Experience where you applied knowledge of quantity food service operations, proper nutrition, food items and appropriate quantities; working with clients, patients, and/or, customers to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; use computers, software applications, databases, and automated systems to accomplish work. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week.. OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation. OR,
Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience. Determine the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the year of specialized experience required at the GS-5 level. Then determine the applicant's education as a percentage of the education that meets the requirements for GS-5. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for GS-5.
