The Utility Systems Repairer/Operator (USRO) is a member of Engineering Services which is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of the Energy Plants Industrial Systems to include Steam Boilers and Centrifugal chillers.

Duties

Major Duties: Responsible for the safe operation of the Energy Plants Industrial equipment and the monitoring of the VAMC's Building Automation System. Strong ability to log incidents or situations that may need reviewing and the ability to direct and consult request from hospital personnel in a professional manner. Ability to provide a professional and empathetic customer service-oriented demeanor in dealing with requests for temperature adjustments, engineering requests and reacting to Emergency situations to mitigate issues that may happen during any assigned or responsible shift. Interact with VAMC employees, guests, patients, and visitors by answering phone calls or radio requests for adjustments of room comfort temperatures, maintenance issues such as water leaks, electrical, mechanical, HVAC systems, temporary supporting systems such as medical tents, generators, lighting systems, and communicating any and all issues with the appropriate department or personnel in the mitigation of issues that negatively affects the VA Medical Center. Must be familiar with Industrial Plant Operations. Responsible to utilize emergency fuel systems on steam boilers to ensure that each boiler is fully operational when required to burn fuel oil/diesel if an emergency occurs from the loss of natural gas. Operating the boiler plant and chill water plant by starting and stopping equipment based on necessary load demands that fluctuates. Responsible for the boiler room, chiller room, cooling tower yard, domestic water pump rooms, fuel pumping station, all-inclusive work areas and surrounding areas free of any hazards such as spills, debris, trash, or all hazmat material. Maintain safe and clean working environment by performing general housekeeping, complying to VA safety and health standards. Will be required to accomplish maintenance to make sure all required paperwork associated with the daily, weekly, monthly, and annual responsibilities are done in an acceptable manner. Ability to work on and maintain pumping systems to include fuel oil, domestic water, filtered water, boiler feed pumps, chill water pumps, condenser water pumps, and condensate pumps. Responsible for making sure available parts for maintenance upkeep and repairs are always available. Utilize communication skills with vendors, immediate supervisors, co-workers in other disciplines to ensure any diagnosing of Industrial equipment issues are resolved safely, correctly, and economically feasible for the VA Medical Center. Physical Requirements: Frequently works in confined areas inside and around boilers and support equipment, i.e., auxiliary equipment's, pumps, motors, fans, cooling towers, air handlers, roof, crawl spaces, ladders, lifts, and ceilings. Work requires moderate physical effort and long periods of walking, standing, climbing, bending, and crouching. Frequently lifts and carries boiler parts and chemical supplies weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted and occasionally items weighing over 40 pounds with the assistance of other workers or weight handling equipment. Working Conditions: The employee typically works indoors. Occasionally works outside for short periods or longer. When working outside is subject to prevailing weather conditions and works on catwalks and ladders. The employee is subject to high temperatures, constant noise, rotating machinery, soot, water, dirt, grease, chemicals, oil, and fumes in the work area. The worker is subject to cuts and abrasions from the use of tools and equipment and burns from chemicals, caustics, hot water, steam, and contact with pipes and boilers. The possibility of bruises, muscle strains, cuts, and scrapes are common to this line of work.
