The Engineering Department in Western New York Healthcare System (WNYHCS) is tasked with the operation, maintenance and repair of a major medical facility. The incumbent serves as an operator in the Boiler Plant Unit of the Operations Section of Engineering Service.

Duties

The operator is under the direct supervision of the Boiler Plant Unit supervisor. The operator must rotate shifts weekly. When working including, holidays and weekends, he/she has shift responsibility. In the event of a breakdown, or malfunction of boiler(s) or auxiliary equipment, the operator must be able to locate, identify and diagnose the problem and independently determine and take appropriate action to safely maintain adequate steam production. The operator i?? responsible for boiler start up and shut down and for placing boiler(s) on or off line and paralleling depending upon the steam demand. The operator is responsible for switching the boiler fuel source from natural gas to #2 fuel oil as needed or directed. As outside temperatures drop and as requested, the operator is responsible for placing heating system zones in operation to maintain adequate heat for the Medical Center. The operator maintains a daily boiler log, boiler plant logbook, underground fuel oil tank inventory log book, boiler water chemical testing and treatment log and a fire system log book as required. The operator ensures a proper shift turnover is conducted and all problems are documented and relayed to the next shift operator and the unit supervisor. The operator performs preventative maintenance, inspections, and assigned cleaning duties. The operator makes repairs as needed in addition to operating equipment and other duties as assigned. The operator is responsible for monitoring and responding to the Medical Center BAS system (Andover system), Medical gas alarm panel, Emergency generator alarm panels, and SCADA system and for responding to alarms utilizing established Standard Operating Procedures. The operator is responsible for monitoring alarms in critical areas such as but not limited to, low oxygen pressure alarm, medical air and vacuum, blood Bank temperature alarm, 14th floor water tank level alarms, Medical Center and Medical Research building temperature and humidity alarms. The operator is responsible for monitoring the Fire Alarm system and responding to alarms or trouble codes and, in the event of a code red (fire alarm) maintains communication with security personnel (VA Police) utilizing established Standard Operating Procedures. After normal working hours or weekends the operator may be responsible for the resetting of devices or disconnecting the Fire panel from the city for drills or repairs. Personnel, equipment and overall plant safety is a major responsibility of the operator. Perform other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Rotating Afternoons, Nights & Weekends Position Description Title/PD#: Boiler Plant Operator/PD02958A Physical Requirements: Stand for extended periods of time while operating machinery. The operator must climb ladders and catwalks as high as 40 feet above floor level. Repairs to boilers and equipment must be accomplished while working in a crouched position. The work requires considerable bending, kneeling, and stooping. Strenuous physical exertion is sometimes required when handling heavy and bulky materials unassisted up to 40 pounds.
