The Laundry Machine Operator is in Environmental Management Service (EMS), at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center, Clarksburg, WV. The incumbent functions at the full journeyman level for sewing machine operation and performs a variety of duties related to textile care operations. The incumbent reports to the Laundry Supervisor.

Duties

Laundry Machine Operations - 70% Operates laundry machines used for a variety of special purposes, including industrial washer/extractor and dryer machines, automated linen folding machines, commercial steam pressers, and sheet spreaders. Uses the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while sorting and loading washing machines, including an apron, gloves, face shield, etc., to prevent direct contact with bodily fluids, including blood, feces, bacteria, and contagious diseases and viruses.\ Sorts and loads washing and drying machines based on capacity of equipment, type of laundry treatment required, and type of fabric. Weighs and adjusts loads to ensure weights are within correct limits and distributed evenly. Ensures the correct cycle is selected based on type of fabric, degree of soil, etc. Sets machine controls on a variety of equipment, for cleaning and finishing purposes. Reports mechanical defects, malfunctions, and low chemical levels to the supervisor. Empties machine lint traps and maintains a clean, orderly environment by sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, sanitizing, and wiping down equipment and surfaces. Moves linens to various areas in the laundry for finishing. Folds, stacks/hangs, and stores textiles neatly and in the designated area. Replenishes linen carts with the correct type and number of textiles. Delivers carts to the assigned areas, while maintaining cart cleanliness standards. Responds to requests for additional linens and delivers timely. Monitors the amount of clean textiles returning on carts daily. Records and reports this to the supervisor. Maintains a daily record of soiled linens, by weight, that are being processed. Ensures the supervisor receives the report for tracking purposes. Assists with the facility-wide annual linen inventory by collecting, sorting, counting, recording, and reporting on hand amounts to the supervisor. Performs other related duties as assigned. Sewing Machine Operations - 30% Repairs and alters linen items and uniforms. Measures and fits employee uniform garments to indicate what adjustments will be made and completes the alterations, making certain that the result does not detract from the fit and original appearance of the garment. Repairs patient care linens that require mending. Sewing operations include hand stitching and operating an industrial sewing machine. Properly maintains the sewing machine by performing routine dusting, cleaning, oiling, needle changes, and minor adjustments including thread tension, setting feed dog height, and belt changes. Notifies the supervisor of major malfunctions or operational issues requiring correction by a contractor. Determines whether linen items are beyond economical repair, maintains a separate count for each item, and documents items being salvaged. Maintains accurate records of patient care clothing and linens when determined to be unserviceable. Responsible for the initial issue of all employee uniforms. Maintains accurate records of all uniforms issued as required in VHA 1850.04. Issues, mends, orders, and maintains an inventory of all scrub garments. Issues replacements for all unserviceable employee uniforms and maintains records of uniforms that are salvaged. Works with Fiscal Service to determine if employees and students/trainees are entitled to government issue uniforms. Ensures uniforms are returned when employees/students separate from the facility. Collects and secures ScrubEx access cards before employees/students clear the station. Assesses the condition of turn-in uniforms to determine if the items can be reissued. Removes all employee identification labels and returns them to the uniform inventory for future use, if appropriate. Determines the appropriate sources to supply uniforms and the supplies necessary for to maintain all linens and uniforms.
