The Electronics Mechanic performs nonsupervisory work on the electrical equipment in a computer operated fully automated one million square foot medical center complex. The automated building management system is completely intergraded into and controls all of the utility infrastructure and environmental controls.

Duties

Major duties include, but are not limited to the following: The Electronics Mechanic is involved in installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, programming, calibration, modification, repair, and operation of electronic equipment that are used at the medical center including programmable logic controllers of all types, electronic frequency drives of all types, gate operators, dangerous gas detection systems, refrigerant gas detection systems, closed circuit TV systems, building access control systems, circuit breaker command/control systems, building environmental controls, lighting control systems, photovoltaic power track system, video wall equipment, and all microprocessor controlled subsystems. Incumbent possesses a wide range of knowledge in support of assigned electronics systems concerning equipment design, networking and diagnostic tools, principles, standards, precedents, techniques, requirements, methods, applications, sources, and procedures to perform a variety of assignments in the assigned application or specialty areas. Knowledge of computer and network based electronic equipment systems to include interfacing, theory of assigned networked systems, maintenance and troubleshooting methodologies for all assigned special purpose facility systems and equipment such as: CCTV and Access Control systems, Satellite and Cable TV, Local Area Networks, Cisco Switches, Fiber Optic Cables and testers, Wide Area Networks, Media Converters, and different types of data cables. Work independently on subassemblies, printed circuit cards, and complex electronic equipment and systems, the Electronics Mechanics independently install, modify, overhaul, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electronics equipment of moderate complexity or a system of limited complexity. Work from manufacturers' specifications, schematics, block diagrams, and technical orders, they determine the operation of the circuits, locate the points from which to take readings, analyze the schematic layout and make preliminary visual inspections and operational tests to determine components causing malfunctions or invalid readings. Electronics mechanics set up and operate computer controlled automatic test equipment (ATE) to test and troubleshoot various components and assemblies of electronic equipment such as Wi-Fi receivers and transmitters; modulators; electronic analog and digital computer components; modules which contain integrated circuits; and printed circuit boards and assemblies. Candidate will require extensive theoretical and practical knowledge of operation, capabilities, and limitations of electronic and computerized equipment and systems as well as skill in applying this knowledge to understand new or extensively modified systems in order to improvise alignment, repair, and operating procedures that will be efficient, complete, and compatible with available resources. Skill in interpreting electronic, electrical, and mechanical drawings, specifications, and schematics of complete custom systems such as a new automated command and control system with numerous remote units and functions that must be coordinated or similar involved subunits that create and use many interlocking signals. Knowledge of electronics equipment design, development, evaluation, testing, installation, and scheduled and unscheduled maintenance. Candidate will require extensive theoretical and practical knowledge of operation, capabilities, and limitations of electronic and computerized equipment and systems as well as skill in applying this knowledge to understand new or extensively modified systems in order to improvise alignment, repair, and operating procedures that will be efficient, complete, and compatible with available resources. Skill in interpreting electronic, electrical, and mechanical drawings, specifications, and schematics of complete custom systems such as a new automated command and control system with numerous remote units and functions that must be coordinated or similar involved subunits that create and use many interlocking signals. Incumbent possesses knowledge of computers and complex basic networked systems, electrical theory in conjunction with physics, pneumatic systems, mechanical systems, algebra, trigonometry, and VA hospital procedures concerning the operation, maintenance, and repair of electronics systems. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Electronics Mechanics frequently handle objects weighing 18 kilograms (40 pounds) and occasionally carry objects weighing 23 kilograms (50 pounds) and over for considerable distances. They are required to push, pull, reach, walk, stand, crawl, kneel,. bend, and work in cramped positions over and under machinery of all types for sustained periods of time. Electronics Mechanics usually perform work inside areas that are adequately lighted, and ventilated. Floor and deck surfaces are sometimes uneven, oily, and slippery. They are frequently exposed to dust, dirt, chemicals, heat, steam, noise, unpleasant odors, moving objects and sharp edges with the possibility of cuts and bruises, and to noise and vibration from machines. Mechanics occasionally service equipment both indoors and outdoors under adverse weather conditions. They are continually exposed to the potential for burns, electrical shocks, cuts, strains, bruises, and chemical irritations. Occasionally they climb and work from ladders and stagings exposing the mechanic to the possibility of serious injury from slipping and falling. To reduce dangers from these and other similar conditions, they follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment such as safety glasses, hard-toe shoes, respirators, hardhats, and fire retardant gloves.
