This position is located with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Northwest Region, Yakama Agency, Division of Trust Services, Forestry in Toppenish, Washington. Duties

Lay out boundaries of cutting areas as outlined in an environmental assessment. Under supervision of a professional forester, select and mark trees to be harvested or left uncut. Estimate volume, defect, and quality of timber. Scale timber. Summarize cruising and marking data and prepares reports and topographic maps indicating quantity of timber and condition of area. Draft area maps, marks unit boundaries and occasionally uses Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to record boundary locations. Protecting soil, watershed, wildlife habitat and other forest resources while conducting timber sale preparation activities.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: (OPM Operating Manual, Qualification Standards for One-Grade Interval Technical or Medical Support Positions, and Individual Occupational Requirements for GS-0462: Forestry Technician Series). In addition to the experience requirements described in the group coverage standard, seasonal experience may also be creditable. A season of experience is considered to be a period of no less than 3 months of continuous employment on a seasonal basis. Shorter periods may be combined to make a season, provided a total of at least 3 months' experience is shown. For any period where the work exceeded 3 months, the excess work is credited towards an additional season of experience. One season of experience is qualifying for GS-2; 2 seasons of experience qualify for GS-3; and 4 seasons of experience qualify for GS-4. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Forestry aid or technician work. Engineering, range, or soil conservation technician work that involved the application of cultural, resource conservation, or land management practices on non-forest or ranch lands when combined with knowledge of forestry operations and equipment. Farming or ranching work that involved application of cultural and soil and water conservation practices, including safety and use of equipment, and that provided a basic understanding of land use. Forest or range fire control, prevention, or suppression work. GS-5: 1 year of specialized Forestry Technician experience equivalent to the GS-4 grade level; OR 4 years of successfully completed education above the high school level leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as those shown below for GS-4. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Experience which has provided the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully function in the Forestry Technician position. Example of qualifying specialized experience include: Forestry aide or technician work. Engineering, range, or soil conservation technician work that involved the application of cultural, resource conservation, or land management practices on non-forest or ranch lands when combined with knowledge of forestry operations and equipment. Farming or ranching work that involved application of cultural and soil and water conservation practices, including safety and use of equipment, and that provided a basic understanding of land use. Forest or range fire control, fire prevention, or fire suppression work as a skilled wildland firefighter. GS-6: 1 year of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience include; provide support with tree measurements, map reading and compass use, species identification, defect recognition and determination, quality determination, use of aerial photos, and use of timber cruising tools and techniques; interpret silvicultural prescriptions and timber marking guides to designate harvest timber; measure amount and quantity of timber in designated timber sale areas; applied instructions issued in a cruise plan. GS-7: 1 year of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-06 level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience include; assist with coordinating staff on work activities and schedules; provide equipment needed in areas of adverse conditions; control of timber marking crew and/or timber cruise team; consult or provide assistance to lower grades; primary contact for supervisor and/or management; OR 1 full year of graduate education in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position (18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours). All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Merit Promotion candidates must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the announcement closing date. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.
