Duties

As a Paralegal Specialist in the Civil Division (Medical Malpractice) in the United States Attorney's Office (USAO), you will: Provide specialized litigation support in medical malpractice, health care fraud and medical privacy matters. Review, organize, and analyze voluminous and complex medical records and other pertinent documents. Provide training to USAO staff and client agencies on medical privacy issues, provide training with regard to reducing medical malpractice litigation risk, assist in analysis and evaluation medical malpractice, health care fraud and medical privacy matters and make recommendations for change in litigation and support operations. Compile case files for attorneys and coordinate with appropriate points of contact to obtain copies of all documentation pertinent to the case or claim. Prepare recurring and special reports (e.g., status of medical malpractice cases) and coordinate, where appropriate, with client agencies. Perform specialized legal and technical medical research in support of medical malpractice work, including research of medical and professional journals and judicial precedents and case law Obtain medical records from non-party medical providers. Prepare presentations for court proceedings by compiling, organizing, and indexing various evidentiary exhibits. Research and locate potential expert witnesses. Identify, coordinate and communicate with expert witnesses. Prepare a variety of legal documents, including discovery requests and responses. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
  • If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
  • Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement.
  • You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement and before placement in the position.

Qualifications

GS-12: To be eligible at the GS-12 level, you must have one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level Specialized experience is defined as: working in a legal environment performing complex medical-legal litigation such as reviewing and analyzing complex medical records; performing specialized legal and technical medical research; knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations; preparing a variety of legal documents, correspondence and summaries of analysis; assisting in pretrial presentations by preparing, scheduling, reviewing and organizing discovery. Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
