Duties

- Performs work requiring an extensive professional knowledge of radiochemistry, inorganic chemistry separation and purification techniques, analytical chemical techniques, tracer and carrier techniques, instrumental chemical techniques, chemical yielding techniques, and all other techniques that may be used in radiochemistry laboratories. - Makes decisions on the appropriate operational radiochemistry procedures used to purify nuclear samples across a wide spectrum of concentrations, from environmental levels up to atmospheric nuclear weapons test levels. - The incumbent will maintain/update a radiochemistry training program that ensures technicians are fully knowledgeable of the radiochemistry techniques required for preparing all types of radioactive samples. - The incumbent will remain current on nuclear radiochemistry research and development efforts conducted at the DOE nuclear laboratories, and select the radiochemistry procedures that will be brought into operation in the AFTAC laboratory.

Qualifications

This is a GG-12 position in the Defense Civilian Intelligence Personnel System (DCIPS). The GG-12 duties for the "Professional" work category are at the "Full Performance" work level and are equivalent to those at the GS-12 level. The selectee's salary will be set within the grade equivalent to a GS/GG grade based on the selectee's qualifications in relation to the job. In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Professional and Scientific Positions. BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Your resume must reflect the quality level of experience which demonstrates the possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies necessary for successful job performance required for this position. Examples of creditable experience include: knowledge of radiochemistry principles, techniques, processes, procedures, and equipment. Note: Creditable experience may include previous military experience, experience gained in the private sector, or experience gained in another government agency. AND KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Extensive knowledge of radiochemistry principles, techniques, processes, procedures, and equipment. 2. Knowledge of alpha, beta, and gamma radiation interactions, radioactive decay schemes, and radiation detection and measurement systems. 3. Knowledge of chemical, industrial and radiation safety regulations, policies, practices and procedures. 4. Knowledge of security regulations, practices and procedures. 5. Knowledge and skill in rapidly applying the appropriate nuclear or radiochemistry techniques to a variety of situations in order to meet critical deadlines. 6. Ability to analyze conflicting information from multiple sources and work well in an operational environment. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing in a clear and accurate fashion. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT CONTINUED: Position is designated special-sensitive and requires eligibility for access to Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI), other intelligence-related Special Sensitive information, or involvement in Top Secret Special Access Programs (SAP) to fully perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. A non-disclosure agreement must be signed. Drug Testing: This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing. Illegal drug use by employees in sensitive positions presents a clear threat to the mission of the Air Force, national security, and public safety. A Master's or PhD degree in chemistry with emphasis in nuclear chemistry, radiochemistry or analytical chemistry is very strongly desired. A minimum of 2 years of direct experience as a nuclear chemistry expert along with 5 years of experience working in a radiochemistry laboratory is highly desired. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
