The Senior Social Worker (SUD) will work in Behavioral Medicine within Mental Health Services. The Senior Social Worker will provide Substance Use Disorder (SUD) counseling services in an outpatient and intensive outpatient setting to the Veteran population enrolled at the Jack C. Montgomery VA Medical Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. These services include provision of assessment on an outpatient basis or bedside on the hospital medical floors or psychiatric unit and high-quality case management.

VA Careers - Social Work: https://youtube.com/embed/enRhz_ua_UU The duties of the Senior Social Worker (SUD) in Behavioral Medicine Service include, but are not limited to: Develop assessments of Veterans in collaboration with the interdisciplinary treatment team, the Veteran, family members and caregivers. Demonstrates an understanding of the range of treatment and skills needed for substance abuse therapy. Demonstrates an understanding of the factors and causes of substance abuse and the problems related to these disorders. Possess the knowledge to accurately diagnose the different types of substance abuse and dependence. Demonstrates an understanding of the range of treatment and skills needed for marriage/family/couples counseling. Must have an understanding of interpersonal relationships, including conflict resolution and knowledge of human development throughout the life span. Utilize assessment tools and methods to best serve the Veteran and responsible for working with the interdisciplinary treatment team to develop a treatment plan for the Veteran based on the assessments. Responsible for developing the treatment plan and setting achievable and measurable treatment goals with the Veteran, family members, and caregivers. Serve as the subject matter expert on VA and/or community resources and will collaborate with other service providers in reassessing the Veteran's needs. Responsible for educating the Veteran, family members, and caregivers of the available services and assisting in establishing the appropriate referrals. Possess experience in making rapid assessments and developing crisis management plans for admission to residential and dual disorder inpatient programs. Provide crisis intervention, stabilization, and follow-up for Veterans, family members, and caregivers. Conduct individual, family, and group therapy on an outpatient basis to deliver needed services to the Veteran, with the primary focus on substance abuse disorders, dual diagnosis disorders and the relationship between substance abuse and family dynamics. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Psychologists must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j. Education: Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to CSWE (http://www.cswe.org/Accreditation) to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a Master of Social Work. Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. Senior Social Workers must be licensed or certified by a state at the advanced practice level which included an advanced generalist or clinical examination, unless they are grandfathered by the state in which they are licensed to practice at the advanced practice level (except for licenses issued in California, which administers its own clinical examination for advanced practice) and they must be able to provide supervision for licensure. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade. Senior Social Workers must possess at least two (2) years of experience post advanced practice clinical licensure and should be in a specialized area of social work practice of which, one (1) year must be equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Senior social workers have experience that demonstrates possession of advanced practice skills and judgment. Senior social workers are experts in their specialized area of practice. Senior social workers may have certification or other post-masters training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship or equivalent supervised professional experience in a specialty. In addition to the experience above, candidates must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: Skill in a range of specialized interventions and treatment modalities used in specialty treatment programs or with special patient populations. This includes individual, group, and/or family counseling or psychotherapy and advanced level psychosocial and/or case management. Ability to incorporate complex multiple causation in differential diagnosis and treatment within approved clinical privileges or scope of practice. Knowledge in developing and implementing methods for measuring effectiveness of social work practice and services in the specialty area, utilizing outcome evaluations to improve treatment services and to design system changes. Ability to provide specialized consultation to colleagues and students on the psychosocial treatment of patients in the service delivery area, as well as role modeling effective social work practice skills. Ability to expand clinical knowledge in the social work profession, and to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines pertaining to the service delivery area. Preferred Experience: Previous experience in Substance Abuse Treatment References: VA Handbook 5005/120, Part II, Appendix G39 The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-12. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-12. Physical Requirements: Predominately a clinical/administrative position that provides direct services to patients and families through casework; must be physically and mentally able to efficiently perform the essential functions of the position without hazard to themselves or others; position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity; requires moderate levels of lifting and carrying (15-44) pounds; may be occasionally be exposed to patients with various disorders; must be mature, flexible, and sensible; capable of working in stressful situations; able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
