This position serves as a Medical Records Technician located in the Health Information Management Department at the Blackfeet Service Unit in Browning, MT. This position reports to the Medical Records Administration Specialist or designee.

Duties
Scans documents, reports, and other pertinent data into the Electronic Health Record.
Processes Release of Information (ROI) requests, enters ROI information into the system and forward records to referral providers in accordance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws and federal regulations.
Maintains paper and electronic medical records in accordance with policy and regulations.
Assists all providers in completion of their health record documentation and assists providers in locating medical record documentation.
Assembles medical records and new charts; Analyzes and evaluates medical records for completeness and consistency.
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
GS-03: Six (6) months of general experience OR one (1) year of education above high school.
GS-04: One (1) year general experience OR two (2) years of education above high school.
GS-05: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level OR four (4) years of education above high school.
GS-06: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level.
Specialized experience at the GS-05 grade level
Responding to requests for information, preparing correspondence for fax, mail, or personal pick up, scanning documents into the electronic health record (EHR), reviewing medical records in a clinic or hospital setting for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with regulations, assembles medical charts to ensure proper sequence and verifies all necessary forms and documents are present.
Specialized experience at the GS-06 grade level
Responding to requests for information, preparing correspondence for fax, mail, or personal pick up, scanning documents into the electronic health record (EHR), reviewing medical records in a clinic or hospital setting for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with regulations, assembles medical charts to ensure proper sequence and verifies all necessary forms and documents are present; retrieving patient medical records for physicians or other medical personnel, processing patient admission or discharge documents, conducting quality audits and verifying the integrity and overall quality of scanned images.
General Experience
Progressively responsible clerical, office or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled.
Specialized Experience
Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.
Education must have been obtained in accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school.
NOTE: Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for all grade levels and positions for which both education and experience are acceptable.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
