This position is located in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System, in Reno, NV. The work is a combination of testing and exam procedures in the lab, and phlebotomy duties. Duties involve progressively difficult work assignments to include work in several sections of the Lab compared to other medical technicians who work in one section of the Lab.
Duties
Major Duties:
Maintain the laboratory facilities and equipment, and assists with maintaining adequate supplies.
Record information pertaining to the storage of specimens or reagents and completes appropriate tracking/inventory system information.
Prepare many types of specimens from any part of the body, or prepares highly specialized specimens involving many steps.
Perform routine tests, where some aspects are not covered in detail in instructions or guidelines.
Perform specimen processing, testing and reporting under the supervision of a medical technologist or technical supervisor.
Perform phlebotomy and other related duties as assigned by the supervisor or lab manager
Maintain and controls laboratory records.
Perform work in the testing area and examination procedures carried out in the laboratory.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/29/2023.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

In addition to the selective factor you must meet the specialized experience below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: (a) Technical and medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. The duties require a knowledge of the basic principles of a biological science to assess readings and measurements taken, tests executed, observations made, work completed, samples collected, etc., to understand and relate the significance of the results to the higher objectives to which the activity is related, i.e., the technician must assess the worth of the data by considering its applicability to the higher objective, by assessing and reporting on the characteristics and quality of the source of the data, or by otherwise creatively interpreting the data produced.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements: Work is primarily repetitive manual procedures related to receipt, processing, preparing specimen collection bottles (100 ml each) and blood viles and keyboard data entry. Tasks typically require extended periods in a seated position. All tasks require manual dexterity and intense attention to task detail for specimen and aliquot identification. The position requires regular lifting of specimen storage racks weighing 15 lbs. and occasional lifting of packages and disposal boxes weighing up to 45 lbs. from floor to table height. Requires regular access to cold room storage areas and occasional access to upright storage freezers for specimen inventory and disposal activities. Occasional trips between floors are necessary to consult with supervisors and retrieve/deliver documentation and specimens. Technician activities require the wearing of laboratory personal protective equipment (PPE) which, depending on the task, will include a lab coat. latex gloves, face masks/shields, and non-porous aprons.
