This position is located within the Facility Management Service at the VA Caribbean Healthcare System in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Motor Vehicle Operator is responsible for transporting VA patients and VA employees on official business on a daily basis.
Duties
On designated days of the week, the Motor Vehicle Operator will drive and make deliveries and pickups of supplies and equipment for the Ponce and Mayaguez Outpatient Clinics, Federal Building Facilities, San Juan Metropolitan area including the International Airport, Ponce and Arecibo Outreach Centers, GSA and the off-station Warehouse in Carolina, PR. Also, will cover the Utuado, Ceiba, Comerica Clinics.
The major duties include but are not limited to:
Transports heavy cargo of supplies and equipment such as medical equipment, perishable foods, machinery, construction and engineering equipment, etc.;
Operates gasoline, diesel or electric powered vehicles 5 ton and 2 ? ton cargo trucks, pickup trucks, diesel for lift, carryalls, automobiles, ambulances, station wagons, vans and buses;
Operates wheelchair handicapped patients bus with capacity for 16 wheelchair patient, maximum of 36,000 pounds, a 30 passenger bus to transport patients and employees shuttle services continuously, maximum weight of 36,000 pounds and 60 passenger bus to transport patients and employees shuttle services continuously and participates in different activities in many places outside the Metropolitan Area, to comply with Recreational Therapy Program when required by such service, maximum capacity of 38,000 pounds;
Receives specialized training on how to operate handicapped bus with medical equipment for patient's safety;
Operates the VA owned Medical Mobile Unit with maximum weight capacity of 38,000 pounds;
Responsible for the receipt and acceptance of all supplies, services and equipment and inspects for and reports any visual or concealed damage;
Performs other duties in the Transportation Section to include transportation dispatcher, preventive maintenance, equipment inventory and other duties as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor;
Fills in accurately and promptly VA Form "Motor Vehicle Trip Ticket" in the database program and in case of an accident "Operators Report of Motor Vehicle Accident" as required by VA regulations;
Performs maintenance of vehicles such as minor mechanical repairs, check oil, brake fluids, power steering, water, gas or diesel, horn, tires, fire extinguishers, change tire in case of a flat tire, wash, wax and clean vehicle; and,
Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Work schedule may include weekends and holidays. Available shifts are 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.; 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; or 8:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Qualifications
DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIREMENT: Applicants to this vacancy must possess a valid Type 8 or 9 Heavy Vehicle category III driver's license. Applicants who do not possess the required license with appropriate endorsements are ineligible for further consideration. Possession of this license should be reflected on your resume to receive credit for your response. DO NOT upload a picture of your driver's license with your application materials; if selected for interview you will be asked to provide a copy of the license at that time.
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The person in this position may be required to lift and carry up to 40/60 lbs. without assistance and handle items weighing more than 40/60 lbs. with material handling equipment. Required to stand, walk, stoop and bend for periods of time. Must have good eyesight, hearing and speech, depth and color perception, use of all limbs and otherwise be mentally and physically qualified for this position.
Must be able to work in condition areas with above normal temperatures. The person in this position drives in all types of traffic and weather on public roads, highways, roads, etc. Required to wear uniform, safety shoes and belt (which are supplied by the employer). May be subject to cuts, abrasions, and bruises.
