Duties
This position is located at Pictured Rocks NL. Serves as a Law Enforcement Commissioned Ranger responsible for performing law enforcement duties under provisions of applicable federal laws and regulations enacted to insure the protection and safe use of national park resources. In collaboration with the other law enforcement managers and supervisors, the incumbent plans, supervises, directs and conducts a law enforcement operation that includes high visibility patrols, undercover/plain clothes operations, traffic enforcement and control, criminal investigations, marine patrols, community policing and public education, resource protection, physical security, special events, and special operations.
The incumbent will supervise, monitor, direct and train subordinate staff in the completion of law enforcement duties and responsibilities on nights and weekends throughout the year. The incumbent assigns and directs responding personnel at accident and injury scenes; establishes scene safety.
The incumbent will supervise and participate in SAR operations. The incumbent is responsible for SAR operations and based on the operational and supervisory needs of the program. The incumbent may oversee or function as the SAR Coordinator utilizing teams to conduct high angle technical rescue.
Physical Demands: The work requires to incumbent to wear personal protective equipment (PPE). The incumbent wears law enforcement gear that, on a regular and recurring basis, includes a fully outfitted duty belt and a ballistic vest. Infrequently, the incumbent is required to wear specialized emergency rescue equipment, such as riot gear and a rifled plate carrier. The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion that, on a regular and recurring basis, includes walking and running over rough and uneven surfaces; moving across loose sand on the beaches; carrying heavy loads of gear and equipment that can exceed 50 pounds; and crouching or crawling in tight or restrictive spaces. The work requires a fitness level sufficient to apprehend a fleeing suspect on foot and defend the incumbent against physical attack. The incumbent is required to work shifts that include all hours of the day and night; the work can subject the incumbent to periods of loud noise; and the work can subject the incumbent to
contact with individuals who have communicable diseases. Position is required to meet and continuously maintain the physical/medical standards as set forth in the requirements of D.O. #57.
Working Conditions: The work is predominantly performed in the field at a seashore environment with a moderate mix of required office work. The field work is accomplished on land and water by foot and by law enforcement patrol vehicle, boat, bicycle and UTV/ATV. The field work can range from hot and humid in the summer with temperatures up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit to cold and blustery in the winter with subzero temperatures. The work environment is stressful and regularly and routinely involves a high risk of exposure to hostile and dangerous law enforcement situations such as defending oneself or protecting others from physical attack; actively seeking out persons who may be armed and dangerous; and responding to emergency calls or intrusion alarm activations.
Area Information
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula on the south shore of Lake Superior between the communities of Munising (population 1800) and Grand Marais. The park encompasses 42 miles of Lake Superior shoreline and is renowned for its colorful sandstone cliffs, miles of beaches, waterfalls and streams, inland lakes, 100 miles of trails and the 1874 Au Sable Light Station. Summers are generally warm and pleasant. The area is rich in public lands and outdoor opportunities. The duty station for this position is Munising, Michigan. Amenities in Munising include grocery and convenience stores, medical clinic, and K-12 schools. Complete shopping and a regional medical center are in Marquette, Michigan, 43 miles west of Munising.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-07/25/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 for each federal position listed as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of qualifying experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. Must currently possess, previously held (within the past three years), or be able to obtain a valid Type I National Park Service (NPS) Law Enforcement Commission, or equivalent, by 07/25/2023. More information can be found in the 'Education' section of this job announcement.
This is a primary position covered by enhanced retirement provisions which stipulate mandatory retirement at age 57 after 20 years of service. Applicants must be at least 21 years of age, and must not have reached their 37th birthday upon appointment to this position. Two exceptions are allowed: 1) an applicant has prior Federal service in a primary covered position sufficient to complete 20 years of service on or before the mandatory retirement age of 57; or 2) an applicant is a qualified veterans' preference eligible, in which case the MEA is waived and their corresponding retirement age may be higher than 57 after completing 20 years of service.

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS/GL-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of specialized experience could include: law enforcement, investigative work, management assistant, or specialist work involving the deployment and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation or management of park areas or similar operations. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least three full years of graduate level study leading to a Doctorate, Ph.D., or equivalent degree at an accredited college or university in directly-related fields such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. You must include transcripts.

Successful completion of a COMBINATION of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take the number of semester hours or equivalent earned towards a graduate degree, in excess of 36 semester hours, and divide by 18 semester hours or equivalent. (Only graduate education in excess of the amount required for the next lowest grade level can be combined with the appropriate level of experience.) Then, take the number of months of experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include hours per week worked. You must include transcripts.

Education
Law Enforcement Commission: This position requires applicants to possess, previously held (within the past three years), or be able to possess by 07/25/2023 a valid Type I National Park Service (NPS) Law Enforcement Commission (or equivalent), which requires completing training from an accredited institution, which currently consists of over 650 class hours and lasts on average 17 weeks.
