Duties

Applies latest technological advances relating to the specialization; and analyzes and evaluates designs, proposals and ideas submitted by others. Determines that all data needed for production is provided in accordance with appropriate design and drafting standards. Prepare cost estimates for engineering projects. Responsible for fire and life safety systems in a medical treatment facility and the outlying buildings. Develops and updates policy that will keep the facilities accredited at all times. Monitors performance of contractor and government hospital maintenance procedures for compliance. Research technical manuals, fire codes or trade reference books to determine appropriate codes for fire and life safety system. Provide guidance to staff regarding technical matters for on-going engineering projects. Write instructions for the operating, maintenance and calibration of equipment.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
• This position may require the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
• This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.

Interprets codes and regulations, (primarily fire and life safety codes) applying them to existing conditions in the medical treatment facility. Technically proficient in all aspects of Life Safety, Electrical and Mechanical that are specific to a Medical Treatment Facility. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-10). Individual Occupational Requirement: Examples of qualifying specialized experience include technical work in: drafting, surveying construction estimating, physical science, mathematics, aerospace, architecture, chemicals, electrical or mechanical systems, mining, petroleum, or nuclear systems. Experience in a trade or craft may be credited as specialized experience when the work provided intensive knowledge of engineering principles, techniques, methods, and precedents. Examples are trade positions with substantial developmental, test, or design responsibilities such as:- Planner and estimator who analyzed designs for production purposes.- Instrument maker or model maker who performed design or development work on devices fabricated.
