This position is located in the Dietetics Service in the Zuni-Ramah Indian Health Service Hospital. The incumbent is responsible for the dietetic function in a general medical/obstetrical hospital serving all age groups and promoting wellness within the service unit community. Duties include planning and evaluating the short and long-term goals for the total dietetic program which affects the nutritional and health status of the hospitalized and clinic patients and the family.

Duties

Establishes and administers the total Dietary Department of the hospital including direction and coordination of the inpatient dietary care and nutrition education of inpatients and outpatients, consistent with IHS agency policies. Develops short- and long-range department plans and programs consistent with departmental, facility mission, vision, goals, and organizational policies; coordinates programs with other departments and services. Supervises development of menus; reviews and evaluates menus with consideration toward cost, availability, nutritional requirements, culturally acceptable diet modifications and patient acceptance. Works with Community and Tribal Programs to provide nutrition and dietary consultation and support, and coordinate programs promoting healthy nutrition and healthy lifestyles. Plans and reviews/evaluates work to be accomplished by subordinates on a daily, weekly or monthly basis, setting priorities and preparing schedules for completion of work.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): You must meet one of the following requirements: A. Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in the fields of dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science. The educational program must have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For dietitian positions, the curriculum must have been in accordance with the qualifying requirements established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) (formerly American Dietetic Association (ADA) prior to January 1, 2012) in effect at the time of graduation. OR B. Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by AND (formerly ADA) for dietitians or nutritionists. OR C. Professional registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). You must provide documentation (copies of transcripts, degree, registration, etc.) to support meeting at least one of the basic requirements. Note: Employees currently assigned to positions in this occupational series as of September 2017 will be considered to have met the basic requirements for the position occupied. You must provide copies of SF-50s documenting your employment in this occupation series (e.g., appointment, most recent SF-50s, WRI/WGI, etc.). In addition, to the Basic Requirements, to qualify for the grade GS-11 you must also meet at least one of the Minimum Qualifications stated below. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A. Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the Federal GS-9 grade level or pay band in the Federal Service (obtained in either the public or private sectors), performing the following type of work and/or tasks: 1) Developing plans for a nutrition and dietetics program based on knowledge of human nutrition and its relations to health and disease. 2) Reviewing and researching health practices, nutritional needs and cultural needs of the population/community to plan an appropriate nutrition or dietetics program. 3) Developing or overseeing the development of nutritional care plans, dietary guides, or teaching tools to aide patients' understanding of their diets. 4) Developing or overseeing the development of menus to ensure consideration toward cost, availability, nutritional requirements, culturally acceptable diet modifications and patient acceptance. 5) Working with representatives from the community on development or coordination of healthy nutrition or healthy lifestyles programs. OR B. Successful completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent) or 3 full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a doctoral degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be determined from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as equivalent to 1 year of full-time study. OR C. Combination of Education and Experience: Education described in "B" above and specialized experience described in "A" above such that the percentage of required experience plus the percentage of required education equals 100%. To calculate, first determine your total number of graduate semester hours beyond 36 hours, and divide that number by 18. Next, divide the total number of months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, add your percentage of education and experience. The two percentages must total at least 100% for you to qualify based on your combination of education and experience. Only graduate education in excess of two years (i.e., 36 semester hours or above the Master's level) may be combined with experience. You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
