About the Position: Fort Drum, the home of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), is located in Northern New York, a historically unique and geographically beautiful area, offering bountiful outdoor recreational opportunities from hunting and fishing to winter sports of all types. Fort Drum is approximately 30 miles from Canada, with the Great Lakes to the west, the Adirondack Mountains to the east, and the St. Lawrence River and Thousand Islands in between.
Duties
Make repairs, modifications and perform inspections on a wide range of small arms and artillery weapons.
Use test instruments such as ohm meters and volt meters to run a complete check on the continuity of the electrical system.
Perform the full range of work involved in the repair, service, maintenance and overhaul of any or all types of small arms and towed artillery; recoilless rifles; mortars; and their mounts, component parts and sub systems.
Determine the nature and extent of repairs required, disassemble, examine parts and assemblies for serviceability, replace parts and assembles as required, reassemble, adjust, and calibrate light, medium, and heavy artillery and small arms.
Diagnose and locate mechanical deficiencies and malfunction in automatic pistols, revolvers, shotguns, carbines, automatic rifles, submachine and machine guns, mortars, recoilless rifles, rocket and grenade launchers, and electric firing devices.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- May be required to serve as a member of the Army Power Projection Platform (AP3) Operations to encompass deployment activities. Work may involve shift work, weekends, and/or holidays, to include mandatory overtime as mission requires.
- This position is subject to the Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968.
- Work requires wearing personal protective equipment such as hard hats, safety shoes, gloves, mouth and nose masks.
- Position requires moderate to heavy lifting up to 45 pounds.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 31
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 25% of the time.
- This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) you are to report to work and/or remain at work.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Artillery Repairer without more than normal supervision. Perform common Artillery Repairer and small arms duties; assist with disassembling, reassembling, and troubleshooting issues with small arms and artillery weapons. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Effort: The repairer bends, stoops, stands, sits, crouches, and kneels when working in confined spaces and awkward positions; lifts or carries parts or assemblies weighing up to 45 pounds and may handle heavier items with the assistance of others or using weight handling equipment.
Working Conditions: Work is performed much of the time in large shop areas that are drafty and noisy, and also at test firing sites outdoors under variable weather conditions and requires wearing hard hats, safety shoes, gloves, mouth and nose masks. Work involves standing, stooping, bending, reaching and continuous hand manipulation of tools and lifting moderately heavy objects. Subject to cuts and abrasions when using hand and power tools in confined places. Also subject to falls when climbing and walking on slippery and inclined surfaces of artillery pieces.
