The Health Technician assigned to the VALLHCS Surgical Service works collaboratively with specialties including General Surgery, Thoracic, Vascular, ENT, Ortho, Urology, Plastics, Neurosurgery, Podiatry and the Women's Health staff.. The Health Technician is responsible for a wide variety of duties that require the ability to interact with patients their, relatives and/or care givers, surgical staff to include Physicians, Nurses, Technicians and other internal/external services.
Duties
The major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Receives and directs patients to room.
Prepares patient for exams and procedures.
Ensures exam rooms are properly stocked with supplies, cleaned between patients and all equipment is in good, functioning order prior to exam.
Verification of patient identification and appropriateness of procedure.
Provides thorough explanation of procedure and any needed education to patient.
Participates in time outs for various clinical procedures and minor surgeries.
Aids the physician in examination and treatment of patients to ensure proper tests results are obtained.
Coordinates the restocking and replacement of supplies and equipment with appropriate services. Maintains a working relationship with sterile processing, distribution and bio-med to ensure necessary supplies are available for procedures.
Daily function checks of Crash Cart, AccuCheck and other specialized equipment.
Aids the physician with minor surgeries including post-operative instructions, scheduling follow ups and incision care.
Prepares specimens and needed requisitions for submission to the laboratory or pathology section per VA policy.
Aids the physician with patient recovery from treatment or procedure.
Performs diagnostic tests and related health care procedures.
Schedules, performs and interprets uroflow test and records results in CPRS.
Assists with Urodynamics studies.
Performs Post-Voiding Residual test, voiding trials, and bladder scans.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 8:00am to 4:30 pm

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05 grade level. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your specialized experience as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Receiving and directing patients to room. Preparing patients for exams and procedures. Ensuring exam rooms are properly stocked with supplies, cleaned between patients and all equipment is in good, functioning order prior to exam. Verification of patient identification and appropriateness of procedure. Providing thorough explanation of procedure and any needed education to patient. Participating in time outs for various clinical procedures and minor surgeries. Aiding the physician in examination and treatment of patients to ensure proper tests results are obtained. Physical Requirements: Physical demands are usually moderate: Lifting objects up to 25 pounds, assisting patients from a wheelchair to and examining chair. Occasionally the technician assists with moving heavy equipment or large patients, but this is done with the assistance of other and/or with a lift, minimizing the danger to the individual. The majority of the time the technician is standing or walking, with frequent computer use.
