The incumbent of this position will serve as Director of Education for the War Related Illness and Injury Study Center (WRIISC) and the Women's Operational Military Exposure Network (WRIISC-WOMEN); plan and develop goals and best practices to help educate VA and non-VA healthcare providers on a national level; and lead the WRIISC-CA's involvement in VA-wide education and training in collaboration with the nationally-recruited Deputy Director for Education and Training - among other duties.
Duties
A. Director of WRIISC CA Education Functions: The incumbent:
Is responsible for supporting the mission, policies, and procedures of the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), the appropriate Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN), and the WRIISC.
In conjunction with WRIISC-HOME, develop short- and long-range WRIISC National Education strategy, goals, and plans. This includes leading webinars, in-person training, enduring materials, and professional presentations as well as planning VISN-wide conferences, organizing journal club series, and managing production of department-wide annual reports. Delegates necessary tasks to multi-disciplinary team members and oversees completion in a timely manner.
Manage administrative and programmatic resources of the WRIISC National Education, to include serving on committees, work groups, and task forces at the facility as deemed appropriate by the WRIISC Director or Program Officer.
Directly or indirectly supervise WRIISC-CA staff, including physicians, nurse practitioners, researchers, on national education endeavors.
Serve as WRIISC-CA liaison to a variety of other offices in VA, throughout VHA, and promote collaborations between the CA WRIISC and those other offices.
Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure national WRIISC education goal attainment.
B. Clinical Functions:
1. Nutrition Assessment: The Clinical Dietitian is responsible for:
Nutrition history including appetite, weight status and recent weight change, activity level, nutrient intake, feeding problems, gastrointestinal and digestion issues, food/drug interactions, and socioeconomic, cultural, religious, ethnic and personal food preferences and intolerances.
Past medical history.
Admission diagnosis/problems.
Additional active medical problems and medical treatment modalities.
Potential food/drug interactions.
2. Medical Nutrition Therapy Plan and Intervention: The Clinical Dietitian is responsible for developing and implementing the plan of nutrition care communicating and cooperating with the interdisciplinary care team; and working with the patient and/or caregiver to accomplish stated goal(s)/outcome(s). This includes:
Planning and documenting in the patient's medical record, a summary of the care provided to the patient, including, but not limited to:
Estimated energy and protein needs as part of a comprehensive nutritional assessment, if appropriate and relevant to patient's nutritional care and intervention.
Current diet prescription, diet guidelines, or nutritional support; as well as providing recommendations for appropriate changes.
Timely and periodic reassessment of nutrient intake and tolerance to the prescribed diet or diet guidelines.

3. Nutrition Counseling: The Clinical Dietitian will:
Initiate nutrition education consistent with the patient's current diet order per guidelines and document in the progress notes section of the patient's medical record and on the interdisciplinary patient education note when applicable Included will be an assessment of the patient and/or caregiver's understanding of the instruction, obstacles to learning, and assessment of readiness for learning, considering emotional, physical, cognitive, age, cultural and religious factors.
Provide reinforcement education for potential food/drug interactions as appropriate;
Evaluate and implement alternate methods for nutrition education, as needed
Provide educational handouts, written instructions, and other materials, as needed
Evaluate and document in the progress notes, and on the interdisciplinary ? patient education note when applicable, the patient's progress toward desired outcomes/goals.
4. Inter-professional Nutrition Care Process: The Clinical Dietitian will:
Actively participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, ward rounds, discharge planning conferences, etc. to monitor and share findings/recommendations with other team members.
Educate the interdisciplinary team and leadership on development and up-to-date evidenced-based medical nutrition therapy practices and standards.
Apply scientific and clinical knowledge in the identification, analysis, and resolution of issues pertaining to the quality of nutrition care.
Serve as the recognized expert in clinical nutrition, including nutrition assessments and evidenced based interventions, gives authoritative advice, and resolves controversial nutrition-related matters amongst the patient population and interdisciplinary team.
Initiate or participate in nutrition research.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) or Registered Dietitian (RD) - Must be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) the credentialing branch of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics formerly known as the American Dietetic Association (ADA).
Current VHA Dietitians that qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision may not be promoted to a higher grade if they do not meet the current RDN/RD requirements.
Grade Determinations: Supervisory Dietitian (Facility Program Coordinator), GS-13
Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.

KSAs:
Knowledge of program administration to establish and modify program goals and objectives, coordinate activities, evaluate accomplishments and solve problems.
Skill in developing quality improvement or research activities.

Ability to supervise subordinate staff (i.e., plan, organize, delegate, direct, control and review activities and performance).
Ability to develop policies and procedures.
Ability to provide program-specific coordination to include leadership, technical advice and staff development.
