This position is part of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, Defense Threat Reduction Agency. This position is a Microbiologist responsible for planning, integrating, implementing, and evaluating activities research and development programs and providing technical and program management advice and support on biological countermeasures to Division Chief and other senior managers.

Duties

As a MICROBIOLOGIST at the GS-0403-12/13 some of your typical work assignments may include: Requires professional knowledge of microscopic organisms and countermeasures applicable to the Chemical and Biological Defense Program. Identifies scientific gaps, recommends steps necessary to develop medical pre-treatments, and solicits research efforts to fill those gaps from service and national laboratories, academia, industry, both national and internationally. Identifies and translates customer requirements into scientific/technical objectives, evaluates alternatives for achieving objectives, and works with appropriate program managers to direct technical and fiscal program plans required to accomplish assigned research and development programs. Evaluates warfighter technical requirements in accordance with established strategy and develops scientific topics for solicitation of research proposals. Analyzes and evaluates proposed research and development program activities for soundness of scientific approach. Reviews and evaluates Medical S&T biological research proposals and provides recommendations to senior leadership on which proposals to accept, taking into account budgetary constraints.

  • This is an Acquisition Workforce position in the Engineering and Technical Management functional area. The incumbent will be required to become certified in the Practitioner tier within 4 years.
  • The incumbent is required to acquire a minimum of 40 continuous learning points (CLPs) every fiscal year as a goal and 80 CLPs being mandatory within 2 years.

Qualifications

You may qualify at the GS 13, if you fulfill the following qualifications: A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service as listed below: Comprehensive knowledge of and experience (3+ years) in applying advanced theories, principles, concepts, of the field of microbiology sufficient to plan, coordinate, integrate, implement, and evaluate research and development which address war-fighter requirements in chemical and biological countermeasures within the specialty area of vaccines, immunology, therapeutics, and related fields applicable to the biological medical S&T program. Comprehensive knowledge of the scientific principles applicable to pretreatment and therapeutic appropriates and capabilities, and a full working knowledge of the methodology peculiar to that area or field. Comprehensive knowledge of and experience (3+ years) with DoD cooperative research and development programs, policies, and procedures in order to plan and execute long-range S&T programs and projects of national and international significance that result in the generation of candidate medical biological countermeasures for the warfighter and beyond. Extensive experience (3+ years) and skill in the application of existing theory, unconventional or novel approaches or sophisticated research relating to the development of vaccines, pre-treatment technologies and therapeutics in order to plan, coordinate and direct the implementation of scientific programs and projects involving microbiological investigations and tests. GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours that your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study.
