This Medical Instrument Technician (EKG) position is located in the Cardio Respiratory Section of the Specialty Care Service. The incumbent operates and monitors electrocardiographic equipment to perform specialized examinations and studies involving exercise stress testing, ambulatory monitoring of arrhythmias, and other cardiac related procedures on chronic patients.

Duties

The MIT (EKG) performs the full range of Electrocardiograms diagnostic procedures and related examinations, monitors tracings to identify arrhythmias and when gross abnormalities appear; when to repeat certain procedures, when to stop procedures, and when to get the immediate attention of a physician. They evaluate test results to determine appropriate machine adjustments and use alternative techniques and procedures when established procedures do not accomplish acceptable results. Duties performed include, but are not limited to the following: Applies ambulatory monitoring devices, scanning Holter tapes/disks, event monitor strips; Instructs Cardiology Fellows and other Allied Healthcare students, in recording aspects of Electrocardiography and appropriate documentation of these exams for interpretation; Performs Holter monitoring, Stress Testing work with the Stress Test specialist; Confers with the Cardiologist concerning "Critical Values" when necessary; Notifies Cardiologist/Cardiology Fellows of significant findings which may require immediate medical attention; Receives patients, explains procedures and performs exams independently setting, calibrating, and operating of EKG and stress EKG systems; Assists Cardiologists, Cardiology Fellows and PAs with technical components before, during and following Stress tests and Nuclear Stress tests; Responsible for setting up for procedures to be done, ensuring that the EKG systems are working properly working; Maintains adequate supplies so that examinations ae not delayed due to the lack o necessary equipment and supplies. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English. Education: There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-04 and GS-05 levels. Licensure or Certification: No certification is required; however, it is desirable that employees at this level have Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-04 Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the position to be filled. Six months of this experience may have been in medically related fields such as nursing assistant, practical nursing, or similar fields. The remaining six months must have been in operating diagnostic and therapeutic equipment covered by this occupation. Experience gained in the operation of the equipment for animal diagnosis or treatment may be credited at this level. In addition, candidates must demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA's): OR, Education. Successful completion of two years of education above high school or an associate's degree with a major field of study directly related to the medical instrument technician occupation. In addition, candidates must demonstrate the following (KSA's): Knowledge of basic medical terminology. Ability to learn the components, operating characteristics, and settings of the equipment to be used. Ability to learn typical patient reactions to the basic procedures involved and ability to recognize signs of distress. Ability to learn the standard positions for the procedure being conducted. Ability to communicate orally and in writing. GS-05 Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the position to be filled. This would be experience in operating equipment related to the particular specialization for which application is made or in related functional areas. Experience gained in operation of equipment for animal diagnosis or treatment may be credited through this grade level.In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: OR, Education. Successful completion of 4 academic years above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation, or a bachelor's degree in a major field of study appropriate to medical instrument technician functions. In addition, candidates must demonstrate the following (KSA's): Knowledge of standard medical terminology to interpret physician orders or instructions. Knowledge of common physical disabilities and ability to position patients for the examination or treatment. Ability to learn the normal and abnormal results for routine procedures to recognize and report obvious abnormalities. Ability to operate the equipment to administer routine/standard diagnostic treatment or procedures. Ability to perform standard operator maintenance on the equipment including the ability to disassemble, clean, reassemble, and calibrate the machine. GS-06 Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. In addition, candidates must demonstrate the following KSA's: Knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the heart and great vessels. Knowledge of cardiac arrhythmias and their relationship to hemodynamic conditions of the cardiac cycle. Knowledge of basic cardiac ultrasound physics and the acoustic mechanisms by which high quality cardiac images are obtained. Ability to set up and adjust the ultrasound equipment to meet the conditions of the examination and the patient and to operate the equipment for standardized, routine procedures. Ability to interact with patients explaining procedures and positioning the patient for the procedure. GS-07 Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. This would be experience which provided knowledge of the equipment, standard tests and procedures, and typical readings including arrhythmias and abnormalities. In addition, candidates must demonstrate the following KSA's: Ability to scan transthoracic echocardiograms in all views with colorflow and some Doppler. Ability to conduct cardiac testing to determine the severity and variety of cardiac problems, i.e., valvular dysfunction, myocardial wall kinesia, effusions, endocardial lesions, etc. Knowledge of the set-up for transesophageal echocardiograms. Preferred Experience: 5 years of experience in EKG, holter monitor, and stress testing. Certification preferred but not required. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-04 and GS-07. Physical Requirements: Light lifting (under 15 pounds), moderate carrying (15-44 pounds, pushing (up to 15 pounds, reaching above shoulder, repeated bending (up to 2 hours), both legs required, near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other, both eyes required, ability to distinguish basic colors, ability to distinguish shades of color, hearing (aid permitted), emotional/mental stability. Environmental Factors: Working closely with others, working alone.
