This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Competitive positions to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: As a Materials Handler assigned to the Mat Sinking Unit, you will work in an issue room on a floating plant that quarters and subsists about 550 employees. NOTE: The duty location of this position will be wherever the Mat Sinking Unit is located.

Duties

Sort and count items and arrange in a neat and uniform manner. Keep storage areas, office and issue room clean and orderly. Issue items in accordance with a computer generated list from Supervisor, and make pen and ink changes on request sheet prior to completed daily issue form. Make routine assignments of bunks to new employees in accordance with availability. You will work approximately 4-6 months per year and be placed in a non pay status when work is unavailable.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Successfully complete and pass a pre-employment physical as well as an annual physical.
  • Lifting heavy objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds.
  • Incumbent must wear an employer-provided uniform.
  • Successfully complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen as well as random drug screens.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Materials Handler without more than normal supervision. Duties include: assembling stock items; rearranging food items; receiving soiled linens and mess uniforms for laundry; keeping the storage area, office, and issue room clean and orderly. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Efforts: The incumbent performs work on hard surface and in work areas that require him to stand, stoop, and bend. He frequently lifts and carries stock. and materials that weigh up to 70 pounds or more. Working Conditions: Works in a well lighted. clean and heated area for the majority of the time. Is occasionally exposed to extreme cold when taking physical inventory of frozen meat and vegetable items. Occasionally exposed to soap and water when cleaning.
