This position provides Pharmacy Technician support to all areas of the Pharmacy Service. Responsibilities include receiving, filling, and distributing medication orders; daily operation and maintenance of automated equipment; participation in inventory control; and collection of data for reports and statistical purposes. A lead technician or Pharmacy Supervisor is available for guidance. Technicians at the GS 6 level will have and maintain a Pharmacy Technician Board Certification.

Duties

A RECRUITMENT OR RELOCATION INCENTIVE IS AUTHORIZED Some of the main roles, responsibilities, and duties include: Read and interpret prescriptions, obtain proper medication or material in the proper strength and dosage form; determine proper amounts and count, pour, or measure medications; affix proper labels; record required data on Pharmacy's copy of prescription/order. Prepare prescriptions per established procedures and protocols and dispense the medication after a final check by a pharmacist. Provide phone coverage for the Pharmacy ensuring timely and accurate information is given to the Veteran. Provide patient education on pharmacy topics such as the process to request refills and drug information sheets. Relay clinical patient questions to the pharmacist. Operate and maintain pharmacy equipment as assigned. Answer questions from pharmacy and non-pharmacy personnel regarding drug distribution. Identify basic therapeutic problems such as duplicate therapy with drugs in the same class and alert the pharmacist to the possible need for clinical intervention. Conduct periodic inventory inspection of assigned pharmacy and non-pharmacy medication areas with completed reports. Maintain perpetual inventory of controlled substances and work in the pharmacy vault as assigned. Complete any repackaging of medication following pharmacy policies, including unit-of-use medications. Process mail-out prescriptions. Monitor and document refrigerator temperature within the pharmacy. Ensure clinic areas are following policy as it relates to their refrigerator logs. Inventory and replenish assigned patient care areas. Stock Omnicells according to par levels set by the Chief of Pharmacy or designee. Perform all other duties as assigned. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement. BASIC REQUIREMENTS 1. Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.). 2. Education or Experience. A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience. 3. Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above. 4. English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy Technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as authorized by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f). GRADE REQUIREMENTS 1. Creditable Experience. To be creditable, the experience must have required the use of knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics associated with the scope of pharmacy technician practice. 2. Quality of Experience. To be creditable, pharmacy technician experience must be documented on the application and verified in an employment reference, or through other independent means. 3. Part-time Experience. Part-time experience as a pharmacy technician is credited according to its relationship to the full-time workweek. For example, a pharmacy technician would receive 1 week of fulltime credit for each 2 weeks of half-time work. GRADE DETERMINATION In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates: GS-6. 1. Experience. One year experience at the next lower level, and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level. 2. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs: Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment. Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders. References: VA Handbook 5005/15, Part II, Appendix G28, March 17, 2006. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-6. Physical Requirements: The work requires moderate lifting and carrying (15-44 pounds); reaching above the shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; standing (up to 8 hours); the ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4. Work involves dry atmospheric conditions and constant noise. Must be able to work alone and work closely with others.
