This position is located with United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Pacific West Area (PWA), Western Regional Research Center (WRRC), Crop Improvement & Genetics Research Unit (CIGRU) in Albany, CA
and will be preparing, managing, and analyzing research data related to crop genetics.
Duties
Duties listed represent the full performance level of the position.
Develops new computational approaches to analyze and interpret crop genetic research data,
Maintains, updates, and implements interfaces for data visualization related to crop genetic research data.
Documents bioinformatic workflows for use by other researchers and makes such documentation available using suitable version control methods.
Makes data from GrainGenes available to others via Web services and creates methods for accessing data in other databases.
Designs, develops, tests, implements, and maintains databases to organize and maintain research data collected and processed by
GrainGenes.
Keeps current with changing web technology and genomic data analysis methods and continually develops new programming skills and domain knowledge.

Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
Basic Requirements:
A. Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
AND
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled and which provided the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position.
GS-09:
Experience: The qualification requirements for this position at the GS-09 grade level includes one-year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level, or its non-Federal equivalent, participating in research related to crop genetics; using computational approaches to analyze biological data as it relates to crop genetics in a biological repository.
OR
Education: 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree if related. related degrees may include Plant Pathology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Statistics or closely related field (Any degree listed must have an emphasis on Bioinformatics).
OR
A qualifying combination of graduate education and experience as described above.
GS-11:
Experience: The qualification requirements for this position at the GS-11 grade level includes one-year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level, or its non-Federal equivalent, developing and applying new techniques related to crop genetics using bioinformatic approaches; implementing and maintaining scientific or research databases related to crop genetics; applying database changes and testing for vendor maintenance fixes in a biological repository; and researching and introducing new evolving technologies to accommodate scientific or research processes.
OR
Education: 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. Example(s) of qualifying academic disciplines include Plant Pathology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Statistics or closely related field (Any degree listed must have an emphasis on Bioinformatics).
OR
A qualifying combination of graduate education and experience as described above.
