This position will serve as a Supervisory Police Officer - Major at the Marion VA Health Care System in Marion, IL , ensuring a safe and secure environment across all VA Administrations with various settings, including a variety of jurisdictional environments, such as VHA Medical Centers and facilities, Inpatient Clinics, Outpatient Clinics, domiciliary and administrative sites throughout the United States.

Duties

Provides advice and guidance to Police Service management officials and staff; Directs and supervises a variety of security and law enforcement assignments and projects performed on VA departmental property; Oversees policing activity and preliminary and/or supplemental investigation of crimes, interviewing victims, complainants, witnesses and suspects; Coordinates, oversees and provides security and assistance to Veterans, patients, employees, contractors, volunteers, affiliates, and visitors entering VA facilities; Protects high value assets from theft, intentional damage and unauthorized removal of government property; Performs various law enforcement and administrative functions throughout the department; Ensures law enforcement and security program policy, procedures and operational compliance; Establishes priorities to coordinate, plan, organize and complete work; Oversees human resource activities such as recruitment of vacancies; preparing, conducting and reviewing performance evaluations; takes disciplinary action; identifies and conducts specific training; approves and monitors leave requests; Responds to highly dangerous and active crimes in progress; Makes independent decisions to take, direct and coordinate immediate steps to preserve life and property; Conducts and/or coordinates long- and short-term investigations; Performs other related duties as assigned. Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. Work Schedule: Full-Time, Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Candidates must be willing to work weekends, irregular work hours and extended hours if determined by the needs of the service. Furthermore, candidates must be willing to be placed, detailed, or temporarily assigned to other related services and/or locations, if necessary. Virtual: This is not a virtual position. It requires stamina, physical agility, dexterity, and the strength to pursue, apprehend or detain persons who are often uncooperative, assaultive, and/or armed.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. GS-11 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-10 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: Supervising and providing guidance/direction to security and law enforcement personnel at various levels on duties in response to potential threats of violence, detecting criminal activity, fire and other emergencies; Enforcing federal, state, and local laws; Conducts and oversees preliminary and supplementary investigations of crimes, interviewing victims, complainants, witnesses and suspects; secures and investigates crime scenes; oversees the identification, collection and preservation of physical evidence; making arrests; Oversees the investigation of criminal cases, offering guidance and expertise, and ensuring that procedures are conducted in accordance with laws and regulations; may have served as a Police Captain within a police force. Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hour worked per week. Experience as a security guard or corrections officer is generally not qualifying. There is no educational substitution for the GS-11 level. LAUTENBERG AMENDEMENT: This position authorizes the incumbent to carry a firearm. Any person who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence cannot lawfully possess a firearm or ammunition (Title 18, U.S.C., Section 922(g)(91)). Candidates who have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence are not qualified for this position. Candidates under consideration will be required to certify whether they have ever been convicted of such an offense. False or fraudulent information provided by candidates is criminally punishable by fine or imprisonment (Title 18, U.S.C., Section 1001). DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIREMENT: This position requires a current, valid, state-issued driver's license.
