The Health Technician assigned to the Gastroenterology section in the Main facility and the Ambulatory Care Center, under Medical Service at VALLHCS, provides information for all specialty procedures in the GI Lab and GI Clinic. This includes planning, managing, and coordinating the GI procedures and patient education, placing orders for anticoagulation, COVID testing, hoptel, drug testing, and pregnancy tests. The Health Technician also performs clinical and support services duties.
Duties
Major duties include, but are not limited to the following:
Verifies patient identification during procedure check-in and driver availability
Prepares patient list and records for the following clinic day
Performs vital signs and enters data in patients' chart, obtains basic medical history in the process of patient triages, and notifies provider of critical indicator or documents findings
Performs patient care procedures such as collection of specimens, applying dressings, and adjusting simple supportive equipment
Works with administration and the GI Lab and GI Clinic for the submission procedural reports
Maintains files and correspondence related to procedures in the GI Lab and GI Clinic
Reviews and adjusts the procedure request with the requesting service and/or GI staff
Enters orders and procedures into CPRS and VISTA under the direction of the GI physician
Triages simple clinical symptoms or questions over the phone for patients calling
Tracks equipment and supplies needed for procedures
Serves as the primary contact for the coordinating the GI procedures schedule
Gives patients instructions and submits orders associated with procedures to ensure all requests are submitted in a timely manner via computerized request system
Serves as the expert and primary coordinator instructing patient on their GI procedures and submits appropriate orders per the physician as needed for day of the procedure
Receives patients and assists GI staff with room assignment and getting patients into assigned rooms
Prioritizes patient flow and ensures optimum utilization of gastroenterology services to include elective procedures, emergencies, and modification to the daily GI schedule
Coordinates the GI Lab and GI Clinic schedule changes and room statuses
Ensures all necessary components needed for procedure are ready to avoid delay and /or cancellation of procedures
Opens, sets up, and prepares clinic rooms, maintains and monitors equipment for procedure visits
Performs daily Quality Assurance checks on all equipment including Calibrating glucose monitoring equipment to yield accurate blood sugar results for patient symptoms, verifying the Crash Cart Defibrillator battery compliance and expiration dates on all supplies in preparation of any emergency, performing initial operator preventive Maintenance and care on the other equipment (EKG machines, vital sign machines, Fibroscan, GI Capsule equipment)
Anticipates the needs of the various physicians, nurses, and procedure area schedule in order to coordinate workflow
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/03/2023.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-5 level) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Performing vital signs and entering data in patients' chart, obtaining basic medical history in the process of patient triages, and notifying provider of critical indicator or documenting findings; Entering orders and procedures into CPRS and VISTA under the direction of the physician; Receiving patients and assisting with room assignment and getting patients into assigned rooms; Opening, setting up, and preparing clinic rooms, maintaining and monitoring equipment for procedure visits.

To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have graduate education or have completed an internship that is directly related to the work of this position. Physical Requirements: Physical demands are usually moderate. Computer work and data entry; assisting patients and GI lab staff. Occasionally, the technician assists with the moving of heavy equipment or large patients, but this is done with the assistance of others to minimize the risk to the individual.
