About the Position: Position is responsible for a dual role in the ammunition organization. The primary role is as an ammunition inspector with the secondary role of performing maintenance, repair and warehousing of ammunition and explosives. May be assigned temporarily to other areas to assist during periods of peak workload.
Duties
Inspects individual munitions items and related material (components, packing, containers) for specific signs of deterioration, defects, contamination, discrepancies, improper markings, malfunction, leakage, etc.
Surveillance Workshop - Selects samples from specified lots for transportation to the Surveillance Workshop. Visually inspects ammunition and components for defects or possible deterioration that may affect serviceability.
Operate APE and other test equipment, as required by type of items. Maintains the calibration-monitoring program for all test/measuring equipment. Performs the required preservation of diagnostic test/measuring equipment.
Incumbent is assigned to normal maintenance, care, preservation, and other ammunition preparation operations to assure safety of end product and to assure safety during operations.
Performs periodic inspections of igloos, warehouses, and outdoor storage sites for physical condition of facility and for nonstandard and hazardous methods of storing ammunition and components.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must obtain and maintain all applicable Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class B and government Commercial Military Vehicle (CMV) license with special endorsements/certifications for hazardous materials within 60 days of employment.
- Incumbent must possess or obtain and maintain Technical Ammunition Course certification within 30 days.
- The incumbent of this test-designated position is subject to random drug testing on an unannounced basis as a condition of employment under the Expanded Army Drug Free Federal Workplace Civilian Drug Testing Program.
- The position is subject to the terms and conditions of the Lautenberg Amendment. The incumbent of this position is required to ship, to transport in interstate or foreign commerce and/or to possess or receive firearms and ammunition.
- The incumbent is required to obtain and sustain Transportation of Hazardous Material certification IAW DTR DOD Reg 4500.9-R- Part II, Chapter 204, paragraph D.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Explosives Operator Inspector without more than normal supervision. I have performed the following duties under normal supervision: Inspecting individual munitions items and related material for specific signs of deterioration, defects, contamination, discrepancies, improper markings, malfunction, and leakage. Loading, unloading, and stacking ammunition and/or explosive materials into storage areas, trucks, trailers, etc.; ensuring compliance with established ammunition handling policies and procedures. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Incumbent frequently lifts ammunition, explosives or related items weighing 30 to 90 pounds. Some assignments require lifts above 60 pounds at a production pace. Incumbent may pull/push hand trucks weighing several hundred pounds. The work requires sitting, walking, bending, reaching, crouching, climbing or long periods of standing. Needs endurance and good eye-hand coordination to work at a set pace and rhythm for extended periods of time.
Works with and in close proximity to unusually hazardous materials. Must exercise extreme care to prevent fires, explosions, etc. that could result in serious injury, dismemberment, and/or loss of life to self and/or other workers. Subject to hazards resulting from operation of industrial and production equipment, from assembly operations, or from working around powered conveyors, etc., where accidents could result in serious injury. Performs duties in warm, well-lighted rooms, as well as outside harsh, sometimes extreme conditions or in buildings with little or no light and heat. Workers must stand on floors of concrete or conductive composition. Incumbent wears protective clothing such as treated coveralls, protective masks, and/or goggles on many assignments. They face possible exposure to an explosion or flash fire. There is a chance of injury ranging from burns, cuts, scrapes, bruises, sprains, nausea, to loss of life or limb.
