About the Position: This position is an Physical Science Technician located with Defense Health Agency, Naval Medical Center Clinical Support Radiological Physics.

Duties

Protect personnel within the facility from exposure to ionizing radiation. Perform laboratory analysis of a wide selection of radioactive materials in several forms (liquid, gas, solid, etc.) Monitor operations during use of radioactive sources, assures that radiation monitors are certified and functioning properly, and determines when workers may enter radiation areas. Conduct all required area radiation surveys. Implement radiation safety policies and procedures for all BAMC radiation sources to minimize exposures. Develop more specific procedures and policies when current policies are not applicable. Research, interpret, and continual adaptation/modification of guidelines will be required. Design radiation monitoring and sampling plans and utilizes counting equipment for measurement of alpha, beta, gamma and x-ray radiations. Participate in Level I and Level II radiation incident and accident investigations to identify probable cause and preventive measures. Maintain all legal records and files required Titles 10, 29, and 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations, and International Air Transport Association regulations,. Maintain records on radiological health and safety, radioactive material shipments, and health physics operations Perform a variety of duties in a hospital that include surveying all radiation areas. Thoroughly analyze the collected laboratory data, identifies and then resolves any inconsistencies.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50?lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
  • Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) performing radiological testing, data collection and analysis; (2) operating and adjusting laboratory and field instruments such as (multi-channel analyzer, liquid scintillation counters, Geiger-Mueller detectors, ionization chambers, etc.); (3) trouble-shooting and diagnosing instrument malfunctions and recognizing potential effect on data analysis to prevent release of erroneous results and (4) providing technical direction and radiological exposure contamination control for all personnel during emergency situations involving radioactive materials.
