This is a bargaining unit position with AFGE local 228. This is not a drug testing designated position (TDP). Serves as a Student Trainee with the Small Business Administration in the Office of Capital Access in Washington, DC. Assignments are selected to provide developmental experience where the student will perform a variety of assignments in support of special or on-going projects that involve program reviews and organizational studies.

Duties

This is a student internship opportunity under the Pathways Program. The student selected for this opportunity will work with the Office of Capital Office professionals by assisting them with various technical, administrative and program support duties. The student will be hired at the GS-7 grade level with the potential of a GS-9 and serve in a developmental capacity under the Pathway's Appointment, wherein the work is less complex in nature and the supervisor or a senior level employee provides specific instruction and guidance. This position is established under the Small Business Administration (SBA) Intern Program. At the successful conclusion/completion of the Internship program, the student may be eligible for non-competitive conversion to a Federal career or career-conditional position. If converted, the student must meet the qualifications of the position being converted into at the GS-9 grade level. The Full Performance Level of this position is a grade 9. As a Student Trainee, you will actively engage in the following duties: Interacts with leadership, managers, team leads, and the organizations workforce including contractors to organize and complete tasks in a timely and effective manner. Performs a variety of administrative tasks as necessary to carry out the work of the office. Schedules and facilitates Microsoft Teams meetings with cross-functional working groups, including creating and distributing agendas, meeting minutes and action items. Updates Office of Capital Access (OCA) weekly tracker. Drafts and develops speeches; presentation material; briefing packages and coordination of fact-finding documentation. Executes and prepares responses to a variety of correspondence. Physical Demands: The work is primarily sedentary, although some slight physical effort may be required. Work Environment: Work is typically performed in an adequately lighted and climate-controlled office. May require occasional travel within the local area.

Qualifications

Student Internship Program Eligibility: Current students in an accredited high school, college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate. To be eligible for appointment to a position in the Small Business Administration (SBA) Internship Program, throughout the duration of the appointment, an individual must: Be currently enrolled or accepted as a student on at least a half-time basis at a qualifying educational institution in a certificate, degree, or diploma program. Be seeking a degree that is relevant to the position. Grade qualifications must be met prior to start date. Must meet the definition of a student throughout the duration of their internship appointment. Complete at least 640 hours of work experience prior to completion of degree. Students who have graduated are not eligible for this position. If selected you: must sign a Pathways Internship Program Participant Agreement; may be employed throughout the academic year; must maintain status as a current student; maintain good academic standing, at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 grading scale. must furnish course registration information at the start of each school term; and must provide verification of academic status (transcript) at the end of each academic term. For the GS-07 grade level: You may qualify based on your education and experience, as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower level, GS-05 of Federal service performing administrative support functions to assist management and staff in the day-to-day operations such as: 1. Directing telephone calls; and 2. Handling correspondence as well as typing and generating various reports; and 3. Editing documents and extracting data using a personal computer and Microsoft applications. These qualifications must be fully supported in your resume. OR Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successful completion of 1 full year of graduate level education from an accredited college or university. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work; OR a Bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement (SAA): SAA is defined as (1) cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher our of a possible 4.0 for all completed undergraduate courses, or those completed in the last 2 years of undergraduate study; (2) GPA of 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 for all courses in your major field of study, or those courses in your major completed in the last two years; (3) Rank in the upper one-third of your class in the college, university, or major subdivision or (4) Membership in a national honor society (other than freshmen honor societies). OR Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of specialized experience and graduate level education (beyond 4 years of undergraduate level education earned). It is available for your review on OPM's Qualifications web site: Administration And Office Support Student Trainee 0399 Series Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. All qualification requirements must be met by 11:59 pm (Eastern Time) on 07/27/2023.
