This position is located in the telecommunications section of the Medical Administration Service at the South Texas Health Care System. The primary purpose of this position is to direct incoming telephone calls, place telephone calls, and monitor various alarm systems.
Duties
Major Duties:
The telephone operator directs incoming calls to a proper destination, supplies information as required, arranges conference calls, places international calls and monitors various alarms.
Incumbent must be able to initiate a prompt and accurate response to receive Code Blue-Medical emergency or Code Green-psychiatric emergency-alarms or to fire alarms.
Incumbent may be required to elaborate on, or coordinate, the internal or external response to these alarms by using electronic paging, overhead paging or telephone.
Clerical and typing skills are required in order to assemble and type daily "on-call" schedule of the different medical specialties, for use by the clinical staff, using information that is supplied by the various medical services.
Incumbent is required to establish a communication link between multiple medical conferees, using electronic paging and proper telephone procedures.
Maintains up-to-date telephone and electronic pager lists.
Incumbent will access the facility computer system to locate employees and inpatients in order to properly direct incoming calls.
Must be able to set priorities when confronted with multiple calls, alarms or codes and then produce a written, chronological sequence of events.
Must ascertain precise information required by callers and determine the best and quickest means to supply an accurate response.
Work Schedule: Rotating Shifts; 7:30am-4:00pm; 8:00am-4:30pm, 9am-5pm, 4:00pm-midnight, midnight-8am, evening/nights/weekends

General Experience: You must have one year of general experience that equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) needed to successfully perform the duties of this position and that is typically in or related to the position being filled. General experience includes progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of this position OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have two years of education above high school. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education as described above.

Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. Some work may require movement between offices, hospitals, warehouses, and similar areas for meetings and to conduct work. Work may also require walking/standing, in conjunctions with travel to and attendance at meetings and/or conferences away from the work site. Incumbent may carry and lift light items weighing less than 15 pounds.
