RECRUITMENT/RELOCATION INCENTIVES AUTHORIZED Employee will serve as an Industrial Hygienist located in the Office of the Associate Director at the Veterans Healthcare System in Tomah, WI.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Duties will include, but may not be limited to the following: Performs industrial hygiene duties that involve asbestos control and abatement, ethylene oxide, formaldehyde, hearing conversation, hazard communication, nitrous oxide, mercury, hazardous and infectious waste management, water testing and treatment, respirator program, and anti-neoplastic drugs. Conducts studies of work operations and processes, examining work environments, analyzing findings, promulgating recommendations, and preparing various reports. Performs inspections to identify occupational health hazards and the need for further investigative studies and surveys to determine regulatory compliance. Surveys/studies includes selecting/devising methods and instruments; conduct measurements; and study and test materials associate with the work operation or work environment. Performs analysis to determine nature and degree of toxic materials present. Receives and disposes of hazardous wastes and maintains records. Prepares comprehensive and legally sufficient written reports of all industrial hygiene monitoring activities. Ensures proper documentation of employee exposures in medical records. Assigned work areas will include industrial shops, surgical suites, production areas, laboratories, research areas, confined spaces, and outdoor work sites. Performs other duties as necessary. BASIC REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must meet at least one of the following. The curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) as a professional engineering curriculum. Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable. A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED); OR A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED); or Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (external link) (ABIH). (CERTIFICATION REQUIRED) In addition to the Basic Requirements, applicants must meet at least one of the following experience and/or education qualification requirements. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Requires one full year of specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-9) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Qualifying experience involves the recognition, evaluation, corrective actions, and elimination of environmental conditions in the workplace that causes sickness, impaired health, or illness. This experience must demonstrate a professional knowledge of the theory and application of the principles of industrial hygiene and closely related sciences such as physics and engineering controls. Such work must have involved experience in all of the following areas: the acquisition of quantitative and qualitative data, and the measurement of exposures for a variety of chemical, physical, and biological stresses; the analysis of the data acquired and the prediction of probable effects of exposures on the health and well-being of workers; and the selection and recommendation of appropriate controls, including management, medical, engineering, education or training, and personal protective equipment. -OR- SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Successfully completed 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. -OR- COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED):Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education (in excess of 2 years) combined with specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. A Quality Ranking Factor* has also been requested by the facility to help determine which of the basically qualified applicants are likely to be better qualified for a position. The quality ranking factor for this position is: Experience in a healthcare/medical environment performing duties related to this position *Quality Ranking Factors are skills, knowledge, abilities, or other worker characteristics which could be expected to result in superior performance on the job. Quality ranking factors will not be used for screening but may be used as ranking criteria. Applicants with higher proficiency levels may rank above those with lower proficiency levels on a quality ranking factor. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
