The position is located in the Nutrition and Food Service at the VA Medical Center in Buffalo, New York.

Duties

This position is the journeyman Food Service Worker in Nutrition and Food Services. You will follow a set procedure in accomplishing repetitive assignments and follow an established sequenced work. You may work in one or more functional areas such as dish and pot washing, kitchen sanitation, food preparation, dry and refrigerated storage, receiving, serving line, and in patient care areas. Removes soiled dishes, pans and utensils and transports them to the proper washing area; Scrapes trays, pre-rinses, washes, stack and stores dishes properly; Keeps work area clean, neat and orderly, able to set up and break down area/station; Cleans kitchen and kitchen equipment; Operates floor scrubbing machine; Provides assistance to cooks in food preparation by cleaning, cutting, chopping, weighing, measuring and assembling ingredients according to standardized recipes; Prepares uncooked food items such as sandwich spreads and salad dressings; Transports supplies to and from storerooms, patient care areas, refrigerators and freezers; Assists in storage and proper rotation of subsistence items; Stores, labels, dates and rotates food items accurately; Prepares coffee, tea and other beverages according to instructions; Works on the tray line placing food items onto tray using tray tickets; Sets up and replenishes food serving line/tray line during meal service as instructed; Sets up glasses, silverware, dishes, trays, tray tickets, napkins, condiments, hot and cold menu items such as entree sides, salads, desserts, bread, and cold beverages on a serving line/tray line; Works in retherm running diet changes, early/late trays, email requests, etc. for ward and outpatient areas; Gathers and delivers tube feedings to patient care areas; Operates elevator and delivers food service trucks to proper wards; Delivers, picks up and serves patient trays/snacks/food according to established procedures to ward and to or for individual patients; Reports patient's comments and complaints; Removes dishes and trays from tables and tray carts after meals; Performs other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Other-10:30am-7pm, 5:30a-2pm, 6am-2:30pm Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Work involves constant standing, stooping, walking, pushing of food trucks, frequently lifting and moving of objects weighing up to 40 pounds and occasionally lifting or moving objects more than 40 pounds. May be required to perform heavy work, such as scouring and scrubbing large size cooking utensils and pushing heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing, and delivering supplies. You also may be required to work on ladders and use power cleaning equipment. Employee is often exposed to uncomfortable temperatures because of steam and heat from cooking and dish washing. Sometimes the employee is exposed to extreme temperatures of the kitchen and the walk-in refrigerators. Regulatory exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades and hot working surfaces. The area is usually noisy and there is constant danger of slipping on floors where food or beverages have been spilled or from mopped floors. The employee is subject to minor injuries such as cuts and bruises. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
