This position is located in the Great Plains Area Indian Health Service, with the incumbent serving as Optometrist for the Woodrow Wilson Keeble Memorial Health Care Center in Sisseton, SD. The purpose of this position is to provide direct and comprehensive primary, preventive and therapeutic medical and optometric care to individuals across the lifespan.

Duties

Independently diagnoses all optometric and ocular problems through external and internal physical evaluation of the eye and surrounding tissue. Refers patients requiring complex medical surgery or services to appropriate medical specialty. Provides vision and eye care education and counseling to patients. Takes complete history from the patient and/or family member to determine risk of eye disease. Records all patient care examinations, assessments, procedures and care plans.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Optometrist Series 0662 (opm.gov) In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS-11: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree and/or 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-9.Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Examining eyes, using observation, instruments and pharmaceutical agents, to determinate visual acuity and perception, focus and coordination and to diagnose diseases and other abnormalities such as glaucoma or color blindness. Time In Grade (Merit Promotion Candidates Only) Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
