The Spinal Cord Injury Service (SCI) Staff physician independently provides clinical services to eligible veterans. Services are provided at the VA North Florida/South Georgia (NF/SG) Health Care System, an outpatient clinic program. The incumbent is required to interact not only with the Veteran but also family, significant others, community agencies, and other staff.
Duties
The major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Outpatient care to include acute and subacute rehabilitation; medical and surgical problems; pressure ulcer management; annual evaluations; palliative and end of life care; and other secondary condition issues relating to spinal cord injury /disorders (SCI/D).
Prescribing treatment for inpatients referred by consultations.
Providing consultation to SCI/D patients located on the other services within the VA NF/SG Health Care System.
Pulmonary management of patients including ventilator management and tracheostomy management.
Appropriate consultation with SCI/D specialized programs, including SCI/D Outpatient Clinics.
Providing outpatient primary and specialized care in the SCI/D outpatient clinic, to include initial and annual evaluations, urgent care telehealth and follow up clinical care.
Providing special tests such as injections or procedures.with a commitment to excellence.
Utilize electronic medical records in accordance with NF/SG VHS policy and other regulatory bodies.
The incumbent is expected to participate in staff meetings, educational activities, administrative and other duties as assigned.
The SCI staff physician reports directly to the Chief of Primary Care .
Work Schedule: 0800 am - 4:30 pm Monday-Friday

Requirements

- Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959
- Must be proficient in written and spoken English

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Preferred Experience: Board certification in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation or Spinal Cord Injury medicine is preferred
Grade Determinations: Staff Physician. The individual must qualify to perform duties as a physician, have completed an accredited residency and/or possess experience which has qualified the individual to perform general duties and some specialized functions and procedures without supervision. Staff physicians may also include attendings who train physician residents assigned in facilities with residency training programs, and consultants who are capable of giving authoritative views and opinions on subjects in their field of medicine.
