The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) serves as a provider of outpatient specialty care of patients in the outpatient Radiation Oncology clinic and provides evidence-based care for Radiation/Oncology patients. The APRN collaborates with other disciplines to develop, implement, and coordinate a system of patient care delivery that promotes communication, teamwork, high quality care, patient satisfaction, positive outcomes, appropriate utilization of resources and cost-effective services.

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) will report to the Assistant Chief of Radiation/Oncology service and will work in the area(s) assigned by their supervisor. Potential areas include but are not limited to patient care areas, primary/specialty outpatient clinics, other areas as assigned by supervisor
The APRN is responsible for the continuing management of assigned outpatients and inpatients. This includes but is not limited to physical examination and treatment, coordination of medical care with other subspecialists, social worker, data manager, pharmacist, dietitian, nursing and other personnel as member of a multidisciplinary team. The APRN provides comprehensive treatments. Maintains an active knowledge of the patient care processes of the Department of Veterans Affairs, the medical center, and its clinics. An essential element is active knowledge of the medical records system (CPRS) and specialized radiation therapy treatment planning software, and include using the computerized medical record system for progress notes, orders, medical record review and completion of such records in a complete and timely manner. The APRN will have knowledge of and abide by Medical Center Bylaws, VHA Rules and Regulations and have a familiarization with existing VA specific clinical guidelines as well as Medical Service rules, regulations and policies.
The APRN fulfills the requirements for employment and credentials as determined by the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System. This shall include mandatory and continuing educational requirements and maintaining active licensure and national certification as a nurse practitioner from a state(s) in the US. The APRN must demonstrate continuing effort to keep abreast of new medical developments and medical literature. The responsibility to complete timely license renewal, credentials and national certification remains with the nurse practitioner.
The overall responsibilities of the APRN, typically include, but are not limited to:
Ensures that high quality patient care is delivered in a resource efficient manner
Evaluate, diagnose, and manage patients with radiation oncology symptoms and diseases
Review and screen consult requests for scheduling and to facilitate patient care. Order appropriate testing as indicated to expedite comprehensive evaluation of patients at time of consultation
This Nurse Practitioner's primary collaborating physician is the Assistant Chief of Radiation Oncology
Complies with VHA regulations and professional standards and ethical conduct
Commission standards, and other appropriate regulations as they apply. This includes but is not limited to compliance with:
Mandatory trainings
BLS requirements
Maintenance of licensures, certifications and/or registrations
Medical record regulations, including timely completion of unsigned and un-cosigned notes
Credential and privileging regulations
Timely completion of action items
Promotes an environment of system-oriented continuous quality improvement
Actively participates in long- and short-term goals in support of VISN &VHA mission, including the VA's research mission
Establishes and maintains effective harmonious relationships with other peers within other services
May be required to perform other administrative duties as assigned by the supervisor

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Preferred Experience:
Masters Degree in Nursing - Required
Clinical Oncology experience (either Radiation, Medical, or Surgical) - Preferred
Clinical Research experience - Preferred
National Specialty Certification (AOCNP, CCRP, ONS)- Preferred
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience.
Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required.
Physical Requirements: Incumbent must possess the mental and physical ability to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment. Physical requirements include visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. May involve potentially long periods of lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching above shoulder, walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, and repeated bending. Transferring patients and objects may be required. Safe patient handling equipment is provided. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations, operative/invasive procedures, or home settings. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health as a condition of employment. The incumbent who provides care in home settings or other off-site locations may be required to drive, sit and/or ride in GSA vehicles for long periods of time.
In-direct patient care work is mostly sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to complete the work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending and carrying of light items such as patient records and supplies. In-direct care staff may be assigned to work in direct care areas as needed.
