The incumbent will participate as a team member with analysts and scientists in all phases of the research process and support technical, operational, and management responsibility for specific phases of the research.

Duties
Perform geospatial analyses of large datasets using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), including metadata documentation
Provide program support for the collection, compilation, storage, analysis, reporting, and distribution of strategic multi-resource data
Assist researchers or staff in the manipulation of data
Operate complex computer systems and software packages
Utilize geospatial technology such as geographic information systems; image processing; remote sensing; or web, mobile and global positioning systems
Compile natural resource, topographic, and cartographic data for creation of thematic map products and presentation materials
Use established procedures to produce maps and graphics for partners and other inventory specialists
Requirements

Qualifications

Basic Requirement for the 0401 series:
Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
or
Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.
Minimum Qualifications:
For the GS-09 level: The applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service. To qualify at the GS-09 level, your resume must show one year of specialized experience at the GS-7 level or above performing 3 out of 4 the following:
Participating in the development of data dictionaries, data models, and metadata for multi-disciplinary information and geospatial applications
Participating in the initial stages of project planning and providing technical support for forestry research projects
Creating thematic map products and presentation materials using established automated map and chart making processes
Applying basic geographic and cartographic principles to the resolution of issues in geospatial database construction and map compilation
OR
Two years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree, or master's or equivalent graduate degree with a thesis or coursework related to forest ecology, natural resources, or geography.
OR
An appropriate combination of specialized experience and education described above. Only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify for this grade level. Your education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
