The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Louisiana is located in downtown Baton Rouge. The district covers a nine-parish region in Louisiana including Ascension, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberville, Livingston, Pointe Coupee, St. Helena, West Baton Rouge, and West Feliciana parishes. Duties

The Civil Division of the United States Attorney's Office is currently accepting applications from experienced attorneys who have a strong civil-litigation background for the position. This position primarily involves representing the United States and its agencies and employees in litigation brought against the government in a wide variety of subject matters. The case-load includes employment litigation (Title VII, ADEA, Rehabilitation Act, ADA, etc.); Federal Tort Claims Act litigation (premises liability, vehicle accidents, medical malpractice, etc.); statutory and constitutional challenges to government programs and regulations; Administrative Procedure Act challenges to agency decisions; constitutional challenges to federal statutes; Bivens civil rights suits against federal officers and employees; collections; bankruptcy; and challenges to land management decisions under a variety of federal land management statutes. While the primary focus of this position will be defensive litigation, the attorney filling this position may also have the opportunity to handle affirmative civil litigation. The affirmative case-load could include environmental enforcement actions, claims asserted under the False Claims act, common law tort claims, and actions to impose or collect monetary penalties. Assistant United States Attorneys assigned to the Civil Division must possess the qualities necessary to excel in their mission to enforce the laws of the United States. These qualities include superior advocacy and communication skills, strong analytical ability, management and leadership potential, and dedication to duty. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with other attorneys, support staff, investigative agencies, witnesses, and victims. They must also demonstrate their willingness to meet the higher ethical standards expected of litigators in their interactions with opposing counsel and the Courts. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation. Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. Qualifications

Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) for a minimum of one year as of the date this announcement closes,and have at least one year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience. Preferred Qualifications: Applicants have strong academic credentials, demonstrate a quick analytical ability and the faculty to accurately and precisely articulate the critical issues in a case. Applicants must demonstrate superior oral and writing skills as well as strong research and interpersonal skills, and good judgment. Applicants must possess excellent communication and courtroom skills and exhibit the ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with other attorneys, support staff and client agencies. Applicants must have a demonstrated capacity to function, with minimal guidance, in a highly demanding environment. United States citizenship is required.
