This position is located in Ninety Six National Historic Site, in the Interpretation Division. Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately August to January, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year.

Duties

MAJOR DUTIES Serve as a front-line representative of the National Park Service and the Park while performing duties at the Visitor Center or other visitor contact stations. Explains activities and recreational opportunities (including accessible features & services), interpretative services, cooperating association operations & facilities, trail availability & locations. Provides current, accurate information to visitors concerning the Park and surrounding areas of interest. Informs visitors of potential safety hazards. Provides directions and routes of travel though the Park. Assists visitors who have lost personal items. Administers first aid to injured visitors. Provides information regarding the need for various permits. Distributes maps, brochures and other printed material. Posts information at Visitor Center and other locations. Operates and maintains audio-visual equipment. Serves as member of task and event-oriented teams. Provides support to interpretive and other program personnel such as assisting with special event setup and take down. Assists in setting up museum exhibits. Performs minor maintenance duties to ensure clean, safe, and pleasurable visitation experiences for the public. Gathers information from reporting parties concerning accidents / incidents within the Park area and notify appropriate personnel for further action when necessary. Observes and reports to appropriate staff and officials, Park conditions and visitor attitudes and responses to Park facilities, programs, and activities. Monitors trail conditions and report obstructions, safety hazards for visitors and or employees, hand observed or expressed visitor responses and attitudes regarding preferred activities and programs. Collects and compiles a variety of data and disseminate information by various means. Collects statistics regarding visitor use. Compiles information regarding weather and other conditions and post manually or via website or social media. The incumbent is a member of the Park Visitor Services team and reports directly to the Superintendent. LOCATION INFORMATION: The primary duty station is Ninety Six National Historic Site (NISI). All basic services, including schools, medical and shopping facilities are located within a short drive of the park. The largest city, Greenwood, SC, is approximately 10 miles away from the park. There is no government housing available at the park but there is a full range of housing for sale or rent in the area and the cost of living is considered moderate.Temperatures for the area range from very hot and humid in the summer to moderate in the winter. Ninety Six National Historic Site is administratively grouped together with Cowpens National Battlefield (COWP), Kings Mountain National Military Park (KIMO) and the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail (OVVI). All park sites are located in South Carolina, aside from the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail which spans over 330 miles within VA, TN, NC & SC. Each park unit provides support within the group as needed for special events and on an as-needed basis, and often combine to offer training for staff.

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-07/21/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-4 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: One year of general experience equivalent to the GS-3 grade level. General experience is defined as progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of a Visitor Services Assistant. That may include greeting the public, disseminating information, and providing directions.t You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two years of education above high school (60 semester hours). You must include transcripts.-OR-Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection. Well qualified means that the applicant meets the following: OPM qualification standards for the position; all selective placement factors, where applicable; special qualifying conditions that OPM has approved for the position, where applicable; is physically qualified with reasonable accommodation, where appropriate to satisfactorily perform the duties of the position upon entry; and is rated by the organization at least at the well qualified level on all competencies. Federal employees seeking CTAP/ICTAP eligibility must submit proof that they meet the requirements of 5 CFR 330.605(2) for CTAP and 5 CFR 330.704 for ICTAP. This includes a copy of the agency notice, a copy of their most recent Performance Rating, and a copy of their most recent SF-50 noting current position, grade level, and duty location.
