The Medical Administrative Assistant has the responsibility of providing administrative support to various areas in the Medical Center during other than normal hours. Intrinsic to the position is the application of admission procedures, monitoring of patient bed movements, patient eligibility determination, decedent affairs, transportation arrangements and eligibility rules, as well as the Privacy and Freedom of Information Act.
Duties

Duties include, but are no limited to, the following:
Provides administrative support during other than regular hours with authority to act on all areas other then actual patient treatment
Ensures admission office procedures are properly conducted in accordance with VA and Medical Center directives
Updates Bed Management System (BMS), making bed movements and taking actions needed in support of the inpatient clinical staff
Coordinates patient referrals and transfers to and from the Medical Center
Advises clinical staff regarding bed availability, administrative acceptance/referral criteria and requirements, to ensure patients are appropriately accepted or referred to either community or VA facilities
Arranges medically indicated transportation and properly documents authorization
Generated daily Gains and Losses report
Briefs oncoming shift of pending events
Ensures all reported data is accurate
Implements death details activities
Ensures all Decedent Affairs activities are conducted in compliance with VA and Medical Center directives and state laws
Performs administrative duties in support of inpatient wards to include printing and issuing wristbands, verifying patient demographics, scanning records, etc.
Receives and responds to telephonic and face to face contacts from the public, media, Veterans service organizations, etc.
Conducts special analytical reviews and studies regarding medical administrative management areas
Conducts special investigations regarding patient or employee complaints and problems
Takes call out calls from providers and staff and acts to ensure that the appropriate supervisors are notified of the call out
Performs all other duties as assigned
Work Schedule: Full Time, M-S, 4pm to 12am.
Required to support off-tour and weekend rotation. Saturday 10am - 6pm, 4pm to 12am. Sunday 10am - 6pm, 4pm to 12am.

Qualifications
TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION AT THE GS-07 LEVEL, YOU MUST HAVE: At least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-06) in Federal Service that has equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of a Medical Administrative Assistant. Specialized experience includes interpreting Federal and State healthcare laws; responding to questions and calls from patients and family concerning services; performing administrative duties in relation to routine and non-routine hospital registration/admission; advising on matters of eligibility as they relate to patient care and treatment; preparing hospital reports; processing patient transfers to other facilities for care/treatment; and independently providing other related administrative support work in a health care facility.
