This position serves as a National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106 Cultural Resources Specialist located at Joshua Tree National Park in the Office of Planning and Compliance which reports to the Park Superintendent.

Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by 11:59 EST when the 'applicant cut-off' is reached (which may be sooner than 07/25/2023).
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience.
For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected.
For this position, you must meet the basic requirement AND minimum qualifications (and for the 0193, Secretary Standards for Archeology):
0193 Basic Requirement - You must possess at least one of the four basic requirements:
1. Education: Degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas:
History of archeology.
Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa.
Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development.
Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques.
Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work.
AND
Six semester hours of related course work in:
geography, geology, or cultural geography;
history, historiography, or historical archeology;
environmental studies;
scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or
surveying;
AND
Archeological field school. You must include transcripts.-OR-
2. Related Curriculum: degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements above (including archeological field school). You must include transcripts.-OR-
3. Combination: College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in 1 or 2 above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education to total 4 years. This combination must demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work of an archeologist comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study. You must include hours per week worked and transcripts.-OR-
4. Experience: Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher-grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project. You must include hours per week worked.
-AND-
You must also meet the Secretary Standards for Archeology: The minimum professional qualifications in archeology are a professional graduate degree in archeology, anthropology or a closely related field PLUS all the following:
at least one year of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training in archeological research, administration or management; AND
at least four months of supervised field and analytic experience in general North American archeology AND
demonstrated ability to carry research to completion.
0807 Basic Requirement - You must possess at least one of the following:
Education: Completion of a 5 -year degree program of at least 160 semester hours from an accredited college or university leading to a Bachelor's degree in Landscape architecture
Successful completion of a COMBINATION of experience and education that includes 1 year of experience under professional leadership and guidance of such character and diversity as to be a satisfactory substitute for the required education. This experience must have included original landscape design.
- AND -Minimum Qualifications: You must possess at least one of the following:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience includes: Applying principles of cultural resource management, including but not limited to archeology and historic landscape architecture. Experience with diverse cultural resources management situations, including logistical, informational, and background documents necessary to analyze potential impacts to cultural resources. Conducting project reviews and provide technical assistance regarding cultural resource compliance and guide the application of statutes and regulations to the planning process for all types of projects. You must include hours per week worked. -OR-
EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least three years of progressively higher-level graduate education from an accredited university leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in archeology or landscape architecture or other field directly related to this position, which demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position. You must include transcripts. -OR-
Successful completion of a COMBINATION of experience and education as described above. NOTE: only graduate education beyond the second year is creditable when combining. First, determine qualifying professional/specialized experience as a percentage of by taking the amount of experience required and dividing by 12. Then, take your percentage of graduate education in excess of the second year (or 36 semester hours) and divide by 18. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include hours per week worked and include transcripts.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

accredited institution with
your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking and degree conferral, if applicable. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
