Duties

You will determine malfunctions with mobile equipment to make repairs or replace defective parts. You will determine sequence of operations, skill set requirements, material, tooling, and facilities needed to accomplish heavy mobile equipment work assignments. You will use hoisting equipment to lift heavy items (e.g., engine parts) on heavy mobile equipment. You will follow verbal instructions from supervisor while performing heavy mobile equipment repairs. You will perform services on heavy mobile equipment up to 26,001 pounds or more.

Requirements

Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below; The Screen-out Element for this position is: THE ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE HEAVY MOBILE EQUIPMENT REPAIRER WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION.: 1) Troubleshooting defective components in such subsystems as ignition, emission, electronic and computer controlled systems, injection systems; 2) Installing and aligning internal combustion engines, hoisting machinery and related equipment; 3) Installing a variety of parts, components, and accessories such as filters, radiators, bearings, springs, shock absorbers, wheel cylinders, starter motors, mufflers, and other items of similar complexity; 4) Reading and interpreting parts lists, manufacturers' repair manuals, diagrams, and electrical schematics; and 5) Utilizing basic tools common to the occupation (e.g., wrenches, sockets, torque wrenches, brake tools, and screwdrivers). Selective Placement Factors for this position are: 1) Must possess a valid California Class "C" License. The incumbent must meet the minimum physical requirements described below: Physical Fitness: The incumbent must evidence sufficient strength, endurance, agility, and speed of muscular reaction to meet the demands of equipment operation. PHYSICAL EFFORT: The incumbent is required to be able to lift objects weighing up to 40 pounds, and operate vibrating tools, such as pneumatic and electric impact wrenches, dollies, hand trucks, mobile hoists, and jib cranes for movement of heavy equipment. The incumbent receives assistance from co-workers in physical movement of heavier equipment or accessories. Work requires sitting, kneeling, crouching, stooping, pulling, pushing, climbing and assuming strained or awkward positions to accomplish work for long periods. May be required to work at high elevations. Work may involve repetitive motion actions in accomplishing certain work. WORKING CONDITIONS: The incumbent is regularly working under and around heavy equipment. The incumbent may be required to work outdoors and may be exposed to varying weather conditions, as well as grease, oils, fuels, solvents, dirt, dust, hazardous materials and fumes. The incumbent must wear required personal protective safety gear such as earplugs, safety glasses, respirators, hardhats, and safety shoes. Is occasionally exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, burns, skin irritations, bruises, electric shock and sprains while repairing/ inspecting equipment.
